Holy crap I stink at cold calling

I found a great tool that can help you refine the pitch...

I use it as a starting point and I find it helps a lot!

empty... I guess Im the guy who called you out.... Not trying to get childlike....I dont have time to read your links, but none seem to be directed to govt sites that make the laws.....FTC - FCC. I have called the FCC and FTC, had conversations with agents and their supervisors all confirming the same thing. That, VB is illegal to consumers ie: reisdential households. The law does not pertain to businesses. I can send you the recordings of the calls, dates, names and organizations. I dont get my info from insurance forums but from the source. We do a ton of Telemarketing, I am versed with rules and regs. If you can find one law, by a govt organization, I would love to read it. Otherwise, you are wrong.

Actually I know I am not. Most business owners, are using their personal Cell Phone, which...is used as their personal residence. Anyone here do that?? Thought so, you could still be sued for that. If you want to take that chance, feel free. I know agents that get in trouble COLD CALLING SMALL BUSINESSES but when its their cell phone they use for the same number, do you think a judge is gonna side with a consumer, or someone who blasts VB's at businesses?

As far as businesses go, I have read FTC docs that say this is banned in the consumer world, and mostly banned for small businesses.

Here is a link to show which states have banned ALSO B2B VOICEBROADCASTING...http://www3.dncsolution.com/marketing/reginfo/reginfo21.asp

so lets see, what states ban you using VB for Businesses:
Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Connecticut
Idaho (restricted)
Illinois
Indiana
Iowa (restricted)
Kentucky
Maine (restricted)
Maryland
Mass. (restricted)
Michigan
Minnesota
Mississippi
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York (restricted)
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania (restricted)
Rhode Island
Tenn. (restricted)
Texas (restrcted))
Utah
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin
Wyoming

I know this link is a private web domain, didn't feel like going through FTC or FCC docs all day to save you money from being sued.

Again, I might be wrong for a couple of states not on that list.. but for the majority I am right. Some people make you money, some save you money, take my advice, or run the risk of seeing your profits seized. So even if there is no FEDERAL law, there are plenty of state laws that will land your ass in debt..

Btw, you called the FCC? I'm sure this will stand up in court,

"but your honor, I called the FCC and they said I could do it"

laughable...

Btw, not to down techniques, whens the last time you got a robocall and bought something off of it?? I know plenty of small business owners, don't know a single one, I know plenty of insurance brokers who have all tried it, and very little sales, even smaller sticking power. After all my disclaimers, you still want to roll the dice on a state not listed above, be my guess, I think it would be wasted money in the end.

Nice, you credited a site of an attorney's firm, chasing business. Your posts would be more credible if you cited the FTC or State Govt's. Even if States do have laws set (I doubt you will find anything that directly speaks about business), it is Intra not Inter laws that would apply. I am not arguing this point any further, if you dont like it dont VB.
Furthermore, one that has not played the game, should not comment about the game. You reference VB method as not working, yet you have never tried it, experimented with it or realized its potential. You merely talk about all your "buddies" that have tried it and failed. You make no comment about if it was press one, message left etc. There are many forms of this. We are dialing everything in now. But from our tests we are getting response, and that is all I care about. Like everything, its a numbers game. It is very inexpensive, gets delivered 80% of the time, and listened to 100% of the time. Can Email Marketing do this, I have tried and have never come close to these numbers.
Plus, it takes an insecure small person to personally bash someone in an online forum. If it makes you feel better about you, it shows how little you are.
Good luck with your Insurance Sales, it is a hard gig. We sell to many agents doing P&C and Auto, I speak with many agents on a daily basis and know you pain. Interesting Name...Tells me alot about you...

The key to selling on the telephone is listening, not pitching. You take charge by asking questions. You use the answers to sell your prospect. If you can sell in person, you can sell on the phone.

Using a straight canned pitch is deadly.

I read somewhere that when cold calling you should get yourself in a professional, selling mood. Get into a suit. Make some coffee. Stand up and pace while you're on the phone(it helps you get words out easier). Use a script if it helps.

I remember the first cold call I made. I actually was so nervous I called once then hung up before they picked up. Then I called then again straight after.

Still not good at cold call This thread has some good stuff.

The best... free... most simple advice anyone can ever give you.

"you will NEVER see, hear or meetup with these people EVER again"

....People may be embarrassed due to an event that may take place at school, or work. Why? Because they have to go back the next day. In this situation, this is just a telephone conversation. So man up, and know these people are just voices and nothing more - you will overcome it.

.....I do this all day everyday (phone calling)

There is so much crazy great information in this thread. I know that I need to add cold calling to my marketing mix, but memories from my telemarketing days still haunt me :(

This thread is truly a goldmine.

i'll cold call for someone. as long as the list of phone numbers is in the US. :)

Yeah, I was extremely nervous when dialing. I know it kinda seems ridiculous, but to get results, you have to take action right? I have been e-mailing local businesses as well, but that has not garnered any leads as of yet either. Guess I'll keep on truckin.

**********When emailing businesses that run PPC*************

Make it a point to let them know that you didnt click any of their ppc ads, i tore a lady up today because she clicked 3 of my ads, i got her ip from the email, saw it in my adwords ip tracker that she actually clicked my PPC ad to market something to me......FAIL - she was speechless

One of the objections that you'll get is "I don't have the money for that". Thats bs talk..

If that person wanted it, that person would find a way to get that money.

So don't take that answer.. Fight back! lol

The person who asks the most questions is in control. You cant let them take over the conversation or you lose.

Neodregan, if you're better in person and can meet them, do that. I would trust someone who is willing to meet me personally more than someone who just calls.

Cold calling does suck. I have been on both sides of it. I started eons ago cold calling, and have owned a call center for 15 years. Called, managed, trained, mentored, etc etc. I is a grind, both calling and managing agents. We call it the windmill or revolving door. Each year we used to go through 200 people, turn em and burn em.
One thing that works well for me, ( I cold call to this day) love it and hate it.
-Have a script or outline - keeps you on point
-Get organized
-Have a clean quiet environment
-Automate as much as possible, there are a slew of dialers or ways to semi automate.
-Play a game, chunk your time
-From 9-10:30 pound the phones - as many owners you can talk to
-Dont fuck around with the gatekeeper, shes a number
-Think of every call as a number, they are numbers until they have an interest.
-Ask....Whats the owners name there. What works well for me forever is ... pretend like you are a customer that has concerns...works 90% of the time....act unsmooth. ahhhhh, yes....I was just wondering....whats the name ....ahhh. of the owner there. If she says whos this....say this is Bob. Pause. I love intentional pauses, it puts the gatekeeper or prospect on the defense and you have the upper hand. Its their move, most of the time she will put you through. If not, she will say whats your company...you say I dont have a company or whats this call in regards to .... you say...I just have some questions...pause. etcetc
there are a ton of methods...this is just what works for me and everyone I have trained. unimportant, just as long as you get the owners name to follow up.
-Have a goal on every call, Get the owners name or talk to the owner
-Dont fuck around with managers, receptionists, marketing managers, really anyone that doen not write the checks.
-Common mistake that drives me crazy is hearing people ask, how handles the marketing and advertising...Its useless and is a waste of time, unless it is a large corporation, then its really a waste of time. Or Drs office other than Chiropractor. Ten ask office manager name and talk to her. You will never get a Doc on the phone.
-Grind that phone for 1.5 hours then take a break, make as many phone calls as you can. I can make about 100 per hour, unless I get into a convo with an owner.
-Dont wate time, get on get off. Dont fax or email anything...its just a blow off. My take on this is, if an owner cant take 5 minutes out of his day to listen to something that will make him money, he is not interested. If you email something he will just say upon call back....ahhh yea, I didnt get that, can you resend it.
we used to have a line at the fax machine of agents faxing shit that never sold. I eventually took the fax out of the room.
-Game of numbers
Once you get the owner on the phone, he spends time with you and has a genuine interest, then feel free to email anything.
-Dont be a walking brochure either, get everything out on the phone. Price, product points, benefits, features etc etc....Go to sell him not to drop of info, make sure his time frame is now to advertise, make sure he has the budget, and for GODS sake find out if he has a partner, spouse, silent partner, manager anyone that will need to be at the meeting to make a yes or no when you go out. Remember this is your time, time where you can make 300 more phone calls. I see about 1 out of 100 calls has a genuine interest....Not someone that says yea email me something, one that is a buyer. and that 1 person will close about 25-50% of the time.
-you absolutely have to know how many failures you need to have to get the success. THis way you know exactly what you need to do to make you goals.
-set goals, and dont end your day or week until you have it, period.

I can go on and on about this topic, it excites me. Sorry for the rambled sentences. I have tons of cold calling tip and tricks that I have written. If there is interest I would be glad to post a more organized thread about it...I just never thought that cold calling was that popular here. I would love to help anyone that need it in this arena.

Sorry to dig up old thread just to say this info is gold thanks for taking ur time to explain, I may need some consulting in future and may need your help

I've been cold calling for years, actually they are leads that have filled out forms. But I use a series of standard questions mixed in with general conversation. with hostile people I get the facts strait first and work from there as in
1 you did fill out a form asking for more info right?
2 ok you do need help in this area agreed?
3 This is exactly why I'm calling you do you understand

Some people need to be verbally put into place and I know its easier said than done, but my time isn't free. ........... Stick with the facts is how I do it

cold calling is not easy to do but you get better with every call. When i was in real estate i had to cold call all the time. Make sure you have a good script and learn it well.

Ya people who say you don't need scripts..... I don't think so. You need an outline of where your going every step of the conversation.
Talking and shifting gears its all similar

Have you ever tried voice broadcasting? We are doing alot of small tests with it now and it seems good. I like it 100% better than email marketing because it gets delivered 100% and listened to 100%. The costs are around the same price. My response is better than email marketing too. We are just tweeking our system now so we can make sure the message ques correctly. It takes alot of tech knowledge but from what I have seen and the response generated it has legs. I am going to hammer out large tests tomorrow about 25,000 bursts to see.

How do you go about this?

I can do voice broadcasting too (probably hammer out the same amounts) but I am always super scared that I might call a residence by mistake in the middle of the night because I don't have a lot of agents. I saw that you were using asterisk in your other posts, what do you do for answering machine detection and at what time do you broadcast? How many agents do you have to have live to prevent dropped calls?

I had a cold calling job for 2 days for a local SEO company, I had never cold called before and I was terrified but for the first 2-3 calls I was nervous. After that my words just rolled off my tongue and I found it alot easier! My boss set me a target of 2 leads, and at the end of my first day I had achieved 8!

Admittedly I did quit the job as it really wasn't for me (sat in a office 8hours a day with 2000 numbers in front of me, being told to start from the top and keep going til I get to the bottom) but at the end of the day nobody can fault a trier!
