Holy crap I stink at cold calling

There is so much great advice here. This is all I can chip in -

I used to do telemarketing in a gig where I just set up the appointments for the closer to call back and make the real pitch. For the first couple of weeks I was terrible and got nothing. Then one day I got an appointment on like my first call that day. Before I took my first break, I had set 3 appointments. This was the most productive I had ever been.

I took my break and enjoyed the feeling of thinking "I can do this after all, it's not that hard." Then I went back to work and set another 6 appointments for a total of 9 in that day. Other guys I worked with weren't doing 9 in a week.

After that, I would always try to start my day with the feeling that I had already done the first 3, and anything else I got that day was gravy. I really believe that attitude made a big change in how I sounded on the phone.

Good luck!

This is the best script I have ever used for setting appointments.
I have tailored my own script to my own colloquialism.

They will teach you a hell of a lot about cold calling in general as well.

Hustling On Clist I always have to cold call people and offer them super low offers on whatever they are selling, It makes me nervous every time I pick up the phone but now it usually goes away as soon as they answer! and I realized the worst they can do is tell me no! but most of all that its worth it to stick out the nervous feeling because you will eventually get a sale or in my case a steal of a buy/trade =P

& Awesome tips in this thread thanks everyone!

BHW, Great tips!

I really appreciate it! I have collected some local newspapers where small businesses advertise (and don't have a website). I will prepare my script and just go for it... cold call them and offer web development services, and of course some SEO.

Thanks again!

Lots of good info's in here- The good news is- Telemarketing WORKS. more than EVER.

I like what alot have said here but CEPI nailed it IMO-
Just make calls. Otherwise go out in person and cold call. Sucks the first few but it gets easier.
What I do is simply try to make friends. Ask questions, make sure you are talking to the right person (huge) and each question is meant to further the convo...the more they talk the closer you are to either a close or appt.
And it's simply a numbers game. IF you are cold calling, it can be brutal. Best bet is to QUALIFY your leads BEFORE you call, if you can. We drive leads for seo in several ways so when we call, it's super smooth versus calling those who at first don't want to be bothered.
Oh yeah..a few other tips:
WHO you call matters (ie what business)
WHEN you call matters (is it their busiest time?)
WHERE you call matters (New yorkers SUCK and are as rude as you might imagine..Utah...ahhh..so sweet :)
And for God's sake- get the contact person's name before you call. If not, your asking the gatekeeper to hit you over the head with a dumbell.

Good luck and keep us posted!
Brian

Successful cold calling boils down confidence and control. "Confidence" will come from you knowing your product/service like the back of your hand. There should NEVER be a question about YOUR product/service that you can not answer, if there is- then shame on you. When you know your product, the prospect will never be able to catch you off guard and ask you a question that you don't have the answer for.

With regards to "Control", you need to become good at asking "good" questions, "open ended" questions that they will need to think about before answering. You'll need to become a master at asking probing questions that will put them on the defensive and make you look like the expert. You need to keep asking questions until you find their weakness and then use it to your advantage. The person asking the majority of the questions will always have control of the conversation.

CEPI said no business owner will bother with you if you don't have unquestionable proof you can provide results. What if you are just beginning web consultation? Should you work for a few non-profit companies to gain exposure and something you can show to businesses that is local? Or is it a better investment time wise to rank some keyword terms for the city that you can sell or show the business owners?

There's way around that!

I'll tell you exactly what I did since I was in the same predicament as you only 2 DAYS AGO! I'm doing something similar to the animoto method if you search for it on here. I didn't have any previous clients or anything to show for. So what I did was make a mock-up of what a final product would look like if I did work for a potential client. I then called a local business up and told them what I had to offer and that it would be a no obligation thing for a month since I was just starting up my business. They were willing to talk because of this. So I went over there and showed them what I could offer and they were pretty much sold once I showed them the mock up I whipped together for their business. I'm going back tomorrow to have them sign a contract! From there, I went to a second business and showed them the mock-up I made of the first business. They were sold on it as well! My advice to you, is to make an awesome product or website or whatever for a potential client and then show your skills. Then they'll have no choice but to work with you and go from there! The value of what they see is relevant, not the value of what you see!

Good luck man!

reminds me of this kid we hired at our brokerage, he worked at 24 hour nautilus and wanted to get into real estate, said he would work for free if we taught him the business. we made the poor bastard cold call 8 hours per day and put bets on how soon he would quit. 3 weeks later he had 3 listings for us and now he is a nationwide "guru", even before he became a guru he was clearing $200k. now, he is retired at 30. in fact helped to found intero and sold his portion before the market crashed. he was 19 when he went on those listing presentations and he looked like he was 16, he really was at a disadvantage.

I dont know why, but I used to crap my pants when calling. I tried a bluetooth handsfree headset and now I talk super confidently. I guess for me, there was something about having my hand to my ear which made me choke. Now when I talk, I use my hands a lot when expressing myself. Might wanna give it a shot [if u dont have it, then try speakerphone, stand up and walk a bit when talking :) ]

A good trick when making a call. Don't be sitting. Stand up and pace around your house. I don't know why but it keeps you more on point.

Ask them if they got your letter about the videos.

If they say yes, tell them you'd like to talk to them about it.

If they say no, tell them that you throw that stuff in the trash yourself and would like to talk to them about it in person.

It works and saves on postage.

Definitely. Most important part is the belief that YOU ARE MAKING THE DECISION! You are in control of the conversation, and if they don't live up to your standards and expectations they won't get to work with you. Combine this with the knowlege that what you do willl undeniably benefit them, and you got yourself a winning combination.

Cold calling does suck. I have been on both sides of it. I started eons ago cold calling, and have owned a call center for 15 years. Called, managed, trained, mentored, etc etc. I is a grind, both calling and managing agents. We call it the windmill or revolving door. Each year we used to go through 200 people, turn em and burn em.
One thing that works well for me, ( I cold call to this day) love it and hate it.
-Have a script or outline - keeps you on point
-Get organized
-Have a clean quiet environment
-Automate as much as possible, there are a slew of dialers or ways to semi automate.
-Play a game, chunk your time
-From 9-10:30 pound the phones - as many owners you can talk to
-Dont fuck around with the gatekeeper, shes a number
-Think of every call as a number, they are numbers until they have an interest.
-Ask....Whats the owners name there. What works well for me forever is ... pretend like you are a customer that has concerns...works 90% of the time....act unsmooth. ahhhhh, yes....I was just wondering....whats the name ....ahhh. of the owner there. If she says whos this....say this is Bob. Pause. I love intentional pauses, it puts the gatekeeper or prospect on the defense and you have the upper hand. Its their move, most of the time she will put you through. If not, she will say whats your company...you say I dont have a company or whats this call in regards to .... you say...I just have some questions...pause. etcetc
there are a ton of methods...this is just what works for me and everyone I have trained. unimportant, just as long as you get the owners name to follow up.
-Have a goal on every call, Get the owners name or talk to the owner
-Dont fuck around with managers, receptionists, marketing managers, really anyone that doen not write the checks.
-Common mistake that drives me crazy is hearing people ask, how handles the marketing and advertising...Its useless and is a waste of time, unless it is a large corporation, then its really a waste of time. Or Drs office other than Chiropractor. Ten ask office manager name and talk to her. You will never get a Doc on the phone.
-Grind that phone for 1.5 hours then take a break, make as many phone calls as you can. I can make about 100 per hour, unless I get into a convo with an owner.
-Dont wate time, get on get off. Dont fax or email anything...its just a blow off. My take on this is, if an owner cant take 5 minutes out of his day to listen to something that will make him money, he is not interested. If you email something he will just say upon call back....ahhh yea, I didnt get that, can you resend it.
we used to have a line at the fax machine of agents faxing shit that never sold. I eventually took the fax out of the room.
-Game of numbers
Once you get the owner on the phone, he spends time with you and has a genuine interest, then feel free to email anything.
-Dont be a walking brochure either, get everything out on the phone. Price, product points, benefits, features etc etc....Go to sell him not to drop of info, make sure his time frame is now to advertise, make sure he has the budget, and for GODS sake find out if he has a partner, spouse, silent partner, manager anyone that will need to be at the meeting to make a yes or no when you go out. Remember this is your time, time where you can make 300 more phone calls. I see about 1 out of 100 calls has a genuine interest....Not someone that says yea email me something, one that is a buyer. and that 1 person will close about 25-50% of the time.
-you absolutely have to know how many failures you need to have to get the success. THis way you know exactly what you need to do to make you goals.
-set goals, and dont end your day or week until you have it, period.

I can go on and on about this topic, it excites me. Sorry for the rambled sentences. I have tons of cold calling tip and tricks that I have written. If there is interest I would be glad to post a more organized thread about it...I just never thought that cold calling was that popular here. I would love to help anyone that need it in this arena.

Impressive neodregan.
Best advice now, get to an easy to deal with number of clients. Over deliver them, take notes and spend serious time filing/organising everything!

Once you've got it off the ground, managing is the next hurdle. Don't underestimate this. No good having loads of clients and you suddenly realise you gotta stay up all night trying to cope with too much, you'll start hating it and lose clients.

Next stage after that, re-invest in delegation/automation.

Play the long game especially if it's local
Good luck man, it's really great to hear someone actually starting something from just an idea and making a good go of it!

:)

offer them something of value for free. people love free shit.

@op: for further step, you can listen to bryan tracy about his selling technique (such as calling, how to make an appointment, overcome objection, and after sales service). you can get his training on warez forum

Way to go..... you are becoming a master at your trade... good going...
