    I've been having good success with smallish clients, but I've been asked for a big one...I'm not really sure if the guy has a clue what he's asking for.

    His website looks very professional but at this point I have no idea how much money he has or how serious he is.

    He gave me 2 terms;

    "term 1" - 1.5million results
    "term 2" - 4million results

    His domain is fairly new, has tiny amount of pages and zero links.

    His competitors have aged domain names, lots of pages (50% thousands) & varying levels of backlinks from hundreds to thousands.

    Beyond that I have dug no deeper.

    Any ball-park thoughts?

    Do any of you guys use some sort of equation to give you an idea of what to charge?

    I don't think this is a good indicator of how hard it will be to rank. there are many easy keywords that show millions of results. Only the backlinks to the first 10 will give you an idea of how hard it is to rank for a keyword.

    You say there are a few websites in the top 10 with only a few hundred links, I think this is good evidence to suggest you have a chance at ranking in the top 10 too.

    As for what to charge, I'm personally in the same boat as you. When I'm not sure about a keyword I usually just invoice £300 when I achieve the top 10 ranking, I'm not sure if this is the best way, but I know I don't have a great repuatation yet and I'd rather give it a go, learn and build my reputation than charge too much and not get the job.

    With experience and reputation I will be able to charge more, right now I just try to get the job with lowish pricing and I don't mind going after competitive keywords and failing because I only charge after I get the top 10 (keeps my concious clear :p )... besides SEO is mainly automated for me so I'm at no great loss of time or money.
