Having duplicate content on a website

I am building a website, and some months ago started putting more effort into ranking it in Google and other search engines. I actually managed to get second place on my primary keyword with several of my articles... but then suddenly they disappeared and reappeared on page 3, 4, or 5 in Google.

When I first started out, I occasionally copied articles from other sites (referencing to them). I have since understood that Google does not like this, but what I am not so sure about is that does the fact that I still have those articles on my site affect the general ranking of my site and original articles as well?

Unique content goes far on a term of a websites growth. Copying and pasting doesn't have a positive effect, but it doesn't have a great deal of negativity effect if that makes sense. Personally... just spin the article a few times and alter the wording and you should be good.
 
Spinning is a great idea. Copy and paste does nothing, but we blog about "similar" topics all the time. Just look at buzzfeed, how many top 10 or hot topic articles are there, they repeat them all the time "2018's top _____" but they have it for 2017, 16, and so on. I'm not saying make lists but the idea of re-promoting content isn't bad.

What spinner to you recommend? Any good free ones?

Free and good don't usually go together but I'd use Small SEO Tools, it's a great website that offers a article rewriter that actually works. I'd use grammarly (I think that's how it's spelled) to check the grammar of the corrections after.

Google will rank websites which must be clean and all the contents must be unique from the other sites. Copy and paste process will ruin the site ranking very soon. To avoid this, you must go with unique fresh content for your site.
 
It's not a great idea to copy content from other sites. If you want to last many years with your sites and want to generate money in long term liabilities, the best option is original and optimized content.

But if you insist on copying content, at least try to spin and leave it a little more original.
 
Do not copy any content. Make it unique. It surely cost more time or money. But its worth.
 
There is TheBestSpinner and SpinRewriter to rewrite (spin) the articles, but if it's a long-term project I'd use manual written content for MS. Don't copy / paste others' articles, it'll fall under duplicate content and G doesn't like that.

Yes duplicate content can affect your ranking badly because original content is one of the main criteria for ranking .

You must need to have at least 85% of your content to be Unique. the content have to be written in differently. it is not that completely different but it has to be written in different way from the original article where did you copied.

so it is just worded differently from the original article.
