There has been a rash of threads started about the latest adjustments that Google has made when it comes to site ranking and none of them have been positive.

Here is something for you to consider when you see that sort of thing happening.

Your backlinking efforts should be consistent and varied. Don't rely on one type of backlink or one service no matter how good they have been to you or how well they have got your site ranked in the past.

    Mix it up!

    Use EDU links.
    Use Social Bookmarking.
Add Content to your sites on a regular basis.
Links like Angela and Paul's links have value.
    Blog Commenting helps.
Assorted high PR profile links should be in the mix.
Hook up with a Directory Submission Service.
    Private Blog Network links.

I could go on and on about the variety of backlinking you should be doing... press release sites, backlinks from articles, SB blasts... if there is a type of backlink out there, add that into the mix of how you are backlinking your sites if you want to have good rankings for a long time.

Do you think that Google would devalue every site that has such a huge variety of backlinks and is adding unique content on a regular basis?

    Come on, no way!

Every time Google makes a shift in how they evaluate sites in order to rank them we see a bunch of threads about how their sites have dropped.

My sites don't get the "Google punched me in the face" issue when G makes a move because I vary my backlinking, I add content on a regular basis and I do it on a regular, consistent, chaotic basis.

Build your backlinks using every conceivable kind of backlink you can think of and do it regularly and mix it up a bunch and you'll see the Google love instead of the Google fist.

Nothing new, but always a good reminder to diversify your links.

Make sure to maintain your link building, because if you don't your ranks are gonna drop and it's gonna be 3x harder to get back to your original rankings

You would be surprised how many people only rely on one or two types of backlinks, Kalyken.

Yeah, most of which being Blog Comments and Forum Profile Links, because they assume since the number of links they are getting are so high, the more value it brings to their site. Your absolutely right when it comes to value, the importance of the diversity of the links and chaotic/random structures are what brings your rankings up,

BassTrackerBoats knows what he's talking about, and if he recommends any services, they are definitely worth the money.

agree to everything that is said here, but at some point you have to stop and think how much you can consistently keep building -content and backlinks.. at what price ?
cause there is a price associated with this and at what point will you ever make that money back :) that is the real math i am trying to figure out
i mean if you are spending 100$ on backlinks/subscriptions and article writing.. and your potential revenue caps at like 50$ its a waste of money

but i guess that again depends on your niche selection/keyword research ?

just some stuff to ponder on.

Most people ponder this all the time. You did it pre-Panda too (well at least if you ended up making a net profit you probably did). Nothing has changed in that regard.

Good point... I only linked to some of the services so you can make it easy(in my case lazy) but you can get all those backlinks using your own efforts and labor.

Great reminder post. Sometimes we are so sucked in to the CURRENT methods that work but neglect that diversity is the key to being as "Google proof" as possible.

Don't forget content, I think Panda is mostly about that and too many affiliate links (just my guess). Diversified backlinks are great and needed but I had a site with only quality diversified links that got hit bad and my site had decent content. But I think there is more I can do with it to comeback.

My sites did not really drop that much. But that goes to show that I have little backlinks..
But they are from all corners of the webz so that must have kept me high on the SERP.

Some of my sites went down and some went up with Panda. Some of my competition has been wiped out and far as I can tell they are purely whitehat. I do whitehat but I am here on this board which obviously means I dabble in grey and black hat and yet I am still there and doing better.

The thing everyone is talking about when they talk about Panda is Panda 1.0 where it went after the article directories and hurt them bad. Now I think the latest incarnatons of Panda are going for backlink diversity. I think that is all it could be judging some of my sites that went down and some of my competitors who also got the hammer.
