So you didn't enroll in the KDP select program in order to be able to publish via CreateSpace?

CreateSpace is a service of Amazon. You can be in the - select program - with your ebook AND publish a printed version of that book via CreateSpace. No problem. Btw: I sold 107 units of the print version this month. Thats a nice bonus of about $500. So its lucrative because you already have your eBook(s). So you have nothing to lose.

I analyse what a book is worth for me - typically $3000 per year and negotiate a price based upon that. Different books have different rates, similarly the details I provide the writer differ according to the genre, there is no blanket answer I am afraid.
 
Going to submit my first ebook now. I made a hilariously low effort book in few hours. I mean, it's not bad, but it's so short. This obviously isn't a serious attempt, more of an experiment on how bad a book can be. I realized that the subject I was writing about was a dead end, so I decided to use what I had written and do this. Complete with a cheesy stock photo cover ;)
 
I put my ebook up to $9 from $2.99 and it got zero buy over few months so changed it back and started getting a few sales a month again
 
Lots of interesting points, thanks. I know a writer who has some unpublished short stories from his starting days. I'll try to buy some of these stories if he is willing to part with them.

How can I set my eBook permanently free?

I know that I have to publish it on another store and set it for free there.

1. But on which platform/store should I publish the book and set it for free?
2. How long does it take until Amazon recognize it (or should I contact the Amazon support and tell them that my book is available for free on another platform/store)?
 
Put my substandard book available for free, got 13 downloads so far :D
I don't expect it to make any profit, so at this point it's more of a curiosity.

Upload the book via something like smashwords/lulu who will upload it to Barnes and Noble, Apple etc where you can set it as free.

Once you have the store link url, contact Amazon customer support with the link and explain you would also like it free on KDP. They usually get back to you pretty quick with it set as FREE.

This 30% additional tax for non-US citizen - does it also apply to other self-publishing sites ?
 
Are all of your books making $2 profits per sale, or do you have some set higher? Have you noticed any sales difference from higher priced books if so?

So I have this mini booklet published few days ago and it comes up on searches for keywords on first page and again depressing that nobody whatsoever has bought it and its popular subject but a bit of a twist on it
 
Guys, it's really easy to get an EIN number for non-Americans. All you have to do is this:

1) Familiarize yourself with the following document, because this is essentially what they'll fill out for you over the phone:
www<dot>irs<dot>gov/file_source/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pdf

2) Call this number: International applicants may call 267-941-1099 (not a toll-free number) 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday to obtain their EIN (if you don't have free US calling, use Gmail on the web or the Hangouts app on your iPhone to call free)

I've found getting things done in the US to be bureaucratic and slow, but this process took just 9 minutes!

I plopped the EIN into Amazon, and it says 0% will be withheld, although verification with the IRS is still pending.

So you are down to about $2.10.

As a non US resident you have to go through a messy task of contacting the IRS to get an EIN number in order to not have tax withheld. It is 50/50 whether they give you one, depending on the mood they are in.

So yes work on the assumption you get another 30% of your $2.10 withheld for tax.

Your looking at receiving about $1.47 or circa 49% of the gross on a $2.99 book.

On a $0.99 book - frankly I would not bother selling them.
Amazon keep 65% so you get about $0.35, 30% withheld for tax of that means you get about $0.25 per book sold.

It is a total pain on the arse. Amazon cream 000's off my income each month and what is really galling is they don't even f##king pay the proper tax to the government!

When you outsource a book how much effort goes into it? Like how much info do you have to supply a writer for a novel of yours ? Could you really just got down a few paragraphs of info and they are able to fill in all the gaps ?

Yes if you are looking at major publishing sites such as Apple, Barnes and Noble etc through an aggregator.
