Keywords are important, but make sure your writing grabs a readers attention and makes them want to buy. There was a study that most people won't read beyond the third sentence if they lose interest, so you need to write something that will make them want to keep reading, and eventually want to buy.

Could you please elaborate on the above...would the series be a long novel that's divided into smaller booklets or lots of different books about the same subject from the same author?

Also, noted your post earlier about moving away from non-fiction to fiction. My non-fiction work is only bringing in a small amount (started my books last year and the page count is very low) so I want to move into fiction but the competition scares me. Any advice?
 
The series that work best for me are novelettes or short stories, that follow one after another. So I'll hire someone to write a series of 4 stories, 10,000 words each, and give them an overall storyline/plot to follow. Then I'll release all 4 books, about one every month, price them all at $2.99, and then bundle all 4 together to sell as a collection and price it at $6.99 or so.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I've tried with a short story in the competitive romantic genre and it got 500+ downloads on the free 5 day promotion but no sales after. It got 1 3 star review. Maybe a series approach would give maintain the momentum?

hey guys, recently started out on kindle myself and had a noob question.

In the reports screen, is the top report a report that bundles all the regions or are they all seperate?
have some on one but also on others but same amount same book so wondering if these are the same or not.

They are all separate. There's a drop down menu where you can choose from all of the different regions to see those sales.

Please can you write on which sites, where do you enlist your free EBook - to get that extra juice.
And please can you tell me how's that affecting your ranking on amazon.com, if you take out reviews away - doesn't it amazon.com outrank your EBook if you post it on other places ?!
Aldo Interesting point of view, it could work, anything from 0 borrowing to 100 borrowing a day, just reading about this method..

Hey GobBluth, now that I'm starting to get over the minimum payment threshold - and am not resident in the US and have to do the tax thing - I was wondering, can you please tell me if I need to submit my tax info to each Amazon separately - eg Amazon(dot)com, Amazon(dot)uk etc. - or only to Amazon(dot)com?

Update: Currently I hit around 30$ per day with my three books- Not bad so far.

I published my third book, a 'love thriller', a few days ago and I'm kinda confused of the sales though. This book only makes me like one, maximum 2 sales per day, although it's definitely my best book of the three and although I have two 5 star ratings (legit ones, not selfwritten or from friends or so) already.
 
GobBluthJD - Have any of your stories become popular? Other than be really excited, I wondered what everyone else would do if one of their stories suddenly became very popular? I mean, it could happen. :)

I currently have three stories up, the first one is getting one purchase a day, the other two are still in their free stages. So far, everything has gotten a 4 or 5 star rating. Thank you so much for this kick a$s thread, Gob!

Depends what you mean by popular - I've been in the Top 10 for a lot of different categories, but I'm still waiting for something to go "50 Shades of Grey" type of popular...:cool:
 
After reading this thread I was inspired to hel[p my mother to self publish her books.

She has two romantic suspense novels which are very high quality.

The free promotion of one of her books started this morning and in 4 hours has recieved over 100 free purchases!

Her other novel has sold 2 copies which went live at about the same time as the promotion started has sold two copies at $3.99 and she has sold 3 physical copies of the paperback version of the promoted book at $7.99.

I paid someone on Odesk $40 to promote the book on 200 blogs, free kindle sites and facebook pages.

I also have a $10 campaign running on facebook targeting kindle owners who like romantic suspense and have used an optimised URL with keywords romantic suspense in the hope it gives the book boost in that category.

Thanks for the fantastic information in this thread. Needless to say I am my mothers favourite son at the moment.

Just checked free downloads on the novel and its shot up to over 500 in less than two hours. Is this normal and does it tail off during the promotion?
