Harpage here, straight to the point . Google has a specific formula for deciding if your content should be indexed.

What is the General Formula for Google Indexing?
The formula for prioritizing which web pages to index is; Indexing Score = (Pagerank_NearestSeed)*Significant Update frequency

This means your nearestseed score multiplied by the significant update frequency of the content. A high indexing score means that your webpage will be recrawled automatically everyday. Low indexing score means that it will be recrawled every few weeks or months unless you requested for recrawling directly on GSC dashboard.

What is "Pagerank_NS"?
Pagerank_NS or Pagerank_NearestSeed is a modified version of Google's outdated pageranking algorithm. This is a page quality evaluation and ranking signal that calculates how far a web page is from a trusted seed page. The shorter the distance, the higher your score. (Google used Newyork Times and Google Directory as examples of trusted seeds in the patent. They also stated that the total number of seeds is 200 or less).

The Pagerank_NS is sometimes applied at domain level so that all pages on a domain with backlinks from seeds will get quickly indexed or prioritized for crawling.

This means that getting backlinks from pages or websites that the seeds have linked to will boost your indexing score.

What is Significant Update Frequency?
"Significant Update Frequency" is the measure of how much and how often a page is changing as calculated by search engine bots.

A modified version of the Google indexing formula is:
Indexing score = (Pagerank_NearestSeed)*Significant Update frequency*Boost Factor

The implementation of the boost factor is if a webpage is the homepage of a website.

What does all this mean?
The summary is that to fix "crawled but not currently indexed", you need to get high quality backlinks from websites that have links from seed websites (we are sure that NewYork Times is in the list). Finally, you need to update your content frequently.

Note that if Google detects changes to the domain registration records, it will devalue the Pagerank_NS score for the entire domain.

Exactly. “Crawled – Not Indexed” usually means Google isn’t prioritizing the page.

To fix it, get quality backlinks from sites linked to trusted seeds and update your content regularly. Pages with low value or rarely updated content will stay in limbo.
