Hey everyone,
Everyday I see threads like this :
- What is my domain name worth ?
- I bought some domains for $10 and I think they're worth $XXXX
- I bought a killer domain name : iphone6.com , how much can I sell it ?
Most of these questions can be answered and usually the same questions are asked every week.
This is meant to be a "guideline" to those looking to buy or sell their domains and to help to value it, and gives general questions you should ask yourself. This isn't a guide to give you an accurate value number like "your domain is worth $5245".
The value of a domain name is closely related to the value of the name as a brand, similarly to an offline brand business name, please remember this during the process of estimating the value of your domains.
Important things to consider when buying/selling a domain name
Ask yourself about the following points and rate your domain for each of them to have a rough idea of your domain value.
Hope this helps some of you, I'll try to complete it when I have more time and correct the eventual english mistakes I could've made.

Ask yourself about the following points and rate your domain for each of them to have a rough idea of your domain value.
- Trademark : does the domain contain a trademarked word ? If yes then it is most likely worth nothing more than the reg fee, as the trademark could snap it from you at any time. This is one of the question that I see asked nearly every day, but no, your domain "iphone6.com", "iphonforever.net", "ferrarii.com", "amazoncamera.com" isn't worth anything.
- TLD :
- .com domains are still kings they have the highest value and the are the most brandable domain names.
- .net domains have a lower value but still have a good brand value depending on the industry (internet,hosting,...)
- .org domains have in my opinion a lower brand value than .net.
- others : TLD such as .co.uk or .de are worth it for local companies but still holds usually a lower value than international TLD, .tv domains value depends a lot on the name itself/industry.
- Length of the domain name : the least characters a domain name has, the rarest, easiest to type, easiest to remember and highest value it has. Think about google, tumblr, msn, and so on : their domain name isn't "cheapbestcarusa.com". 2 and 3 characters .com are extremely valuable.
- Relation to an industry/real words : does the domain name contain a dictionary word (ex: cars.com), can generate type-in traffic or is it appealing for a particular industry ?
- Retention : how easy is it to remember ? does it struck your mind ? will you remember it after seeing it one time ?
- Trend: is your domain name related to a new trend ? will it last ? or will it lose its value after 2months ? or is it a "timeless" domain name ?
- Uniqueness : is the name unique ? or is it similar to another brand/domain name ? (ex: tumblr.com and tumbll.com; youtube.com and yourmovie.com)
- Spelling and pronunciation : can you spell/pronunce it in different ways ? Can you say the name easily or does it give you a hard time to pronunce it the first time ?
