There are different types of penalties:

Algorithmic Penalty:

This type of penalty is carried out automatically and occurs as a consequence of some change in the algorithm that is designed to classify websites in relation to greater/lesser value or relevance. It is characterized by a decrease in the SERP, causing your website to drop in positions, leading to a decrease in organic traffic.

The most common penalties are of this style are:

Google Penguin Penalty:

It is known as “Penguin” and it focuses on the inspection of external links that point to our website to increase our authority. In case they are harmful or purchased (unnatural) and do not have a good origin, we will be penalized (although google ignores toxic backlinks more and more).

These links must meet a series of characteristics:

  • Link Quality – There should be a balance between high and low quality links. They cannot all be of the same type of quality (especially high), you must have a midpoint.
  • Link frequency: not many links should be received in a short time and, in turn, there should not be an abrupt decrease in links.
  • Link Diversity – Get links from all kinds of sources: forum comments, blogs, etc. This guarantees reliability, although most of these backlinks must come from sites with the same theme.

Google Panda Penalty:

Product of an update dedicated to monitoring content for quality.

The penalty is based on:

  • Poor content, “thin content”: it offers a poor quality of content because it is short and superficial. It is not what the user is looking for.
  • Lack of coherence in the writing: it has grammatical, spelling and syntax errors.
  • The content is duplicated or a copy-paste was detected, which is the same as plagiarism.

(Comparing both types of penalty, we can say that Panda focuses on the components that the website generates or acquires that prevent its correct use; meanwhile, Penguin is in charge of searching for those unnatural links, which were paid or were built without publisher's approval.)

Manual Penalty:

This penalty has a difficult decriminalization because it is the most serious. This penalty is carried out directly by a Google search engine worker once they receive a SPAM report, any warning signal that a user may issue, or simply with evidence of a breach of Google's Terms of Service.

It is characterized by sending a notification in Search Console notifying you that you have been removed from the Google index. When you receive this type of notification, you must correct the error and contact Google through the search console so that it can review your changes and, if approved, place it on the search engine results page again.

Google's algorithm is getting smarter, so manual penalties are becoming obsolete.

How do I know if Google has penalized me?

The way to know if you have been penalized or not is by checking that:

Your domain has not disappeared from the Google index. To check it, place in the search “site:www.yourdomain.com”.
The Ranking of your website has not dropped to zero.

To find out if Google has penalized me, ironically you must have met some of the criteria that are frowned upon by Google. Some of the most common and focal are:

  • You have some duplicate content.
  • You acquired poor quality links.
  • There are bad user experiences either because of comments or because they complained directly to Google.
  • You have a high level of publicity.
  • The loading speed is slow.
  • You generate too many error pages.
  • You overdid the proper use of keywords to gain notoriety.
  • There is hidden content.
  • You have made SPAM.
  • You bought or sold links.
  • You overdid the link exchange.
  • You created artificial links.
  • You plagiarized by copying content from other websites.
  • You did negative SEO (these are unethical techniques called "black hat" whose sole objective is to sabotage the positioning of the competitor that is closest to our position so that theirs goes down and ours goes up).

If the penalty has been manually, you will receive a notification in Search Console. One of the best ways that respond to how to know if my website is penalized by google.

In the case of the automatic penalty, you must pay attention to the level of traffic on your website, although in both types of penalty traffic is lost progressively and suddenly until it disappears from the SERP`s.

Other signs that indicate that your website is penalized are:

  • Your keywords that you had positioned decrease in position in the search engine.
  • Other pages of your domain do not appear in Google results.

On the other hand, an important piece of information that can help you know if Google has made an update (which implies that it may have penalized you) is to verify the information on its official Twitter account.

Why might Google have penalized me?

The actions that Google will take on our website will depend on the infraction that we have committed. There are several reasons why Google can penalize us, the most common are:

Links:
  • It is the most common cause of penalty. It occurs when Google detects that there is an excess in links, both outgoing and incoming:

Outbound Links:
  • Having an excess of outgoing links is considered a signal to buy or exchange them. In turn, creating a large number of external links that are directed to another domain on the same website has the consequence of the disappearance of Google results, regardless of whether these links are of the nofollow type.

Incoming Links (backlinks):
  • It is quite common because they can link you to websites that have some penalty with which they would penalize you too. Therefore, we must be especially careful with the links we get. Remember to adhere correctly to link building techniques so as not to fall into penalties.

Malicious content:
  • This malicious content is nothing more than a virus injected into your website. Whatever the reason, you will be penalized by Google because websites must be safe for users.

Outdated site:
  • As we are constantly changing and evolving, if our site is made on an old and outdated CMS or has weak language, it will be penalized. The reason is that this CMS or content manager is prone to any risk since it does not have the necessary security measures for the user.

RichSnippets:
  • When we use rich snippets in a misleading way (Black Hat SEO) Google can notice and penalize you for it. Microdata is a subject that Google looks at with eyes wide open and a magnifying glass.

Cloaking:
  • If you show a different content to the user than to the crawler and Google realizes it, obviously it won't let it go... Your site, in the most extreme case, will be penalized.

Hidden text:
  • Something typical, old school. If we hide text on the web we are implying that it is not important but perhaps for the user it is, for this reason it is essential to show all the content of our website and not camouflage it through CSS or tabs.

Duplicate content:
  • Google requires original content, so when it detects a similarity in the pages or in parts of them, it considers it duplicate content. To avoid this, you can cite by naming the source or creating original content.

KeywordStuffing:
  • Abusing the repetition of keywords makes the content lose value for the user because it is being inserted without any grammatical or semantic sense.

Advertising:
  • When there is too much advertising to force the user to click or the user is uncomfortable with tracking cookies, we will be penalized. In turn, many ads slow down the web, causing the user to have a bad experience and the rebound effect occurs.

Conflicting websites on our shared server:
  • It is important to take into account the neighbors of our website, the web pages with which we share an IP on the server. We share the server, because if our neighbors are casino pages or pages with adult content, even if Google detects the presence of malicious software, it will link the websites on the same server and penalize them all equally.

How to decriminalize my website?

The first thing we must do is detect why we have been penalized. To do this, it is necessary to carry out an investigation to determine, after an algorithm update, which pages have maintained or improved their position in the search engine (pages related to ours).

After this step, it is essential to compare the common and uncommon elements present on the websites and then compare them with the elements of our own website. This is a good step if your intention is to find a way to know if my website is penalized by Google.

It is quite likely that the changes to be implemented to decriminalize us have to do with some or all of these points:
  • Modify the structure so that Google indexes your web page to its index showing it in the results.
  • Modify the content (a part or in its entirety)
  • Review the marking of micro-formats.

However, this may not be enough or it may not be what is causing us the penalty, so we must do a deep cleaning of our link profile.

The tools to find out if Google has penalized me that are currently approved by Google to detect and help with their penalties are:

How to get out of a Panda penalty?

For reasons that the Google Panda algorithm penalizes various types of illicit practices, it is necessary to study and explain the solution for each one separately.

When you have content from others:

Google is quite intelligent to detect when copypaste has been made or what is the same when information from other websites has been plagiarized; If this is your case, the most sensible solution is to redefine and write all the texts of your website and avoid copying in the future.

Keep in mind that today there are tools to find out if Google has penalized me that analyze the texts and tell you if they are duplicates and what their origin is. In some of these, you copy the text that you are interested in analyzing; in others it is done directly by pasting the URL of the site to be analyzed. In case of finding duplicate content, the text will be highlighted and next to it the link from where it could be taken will appear.

When you duplicate yourself:

You must bear in mind that Google will determine plagiarism even when the content that is being shared is between websites of the same owner and only these websites coincide; or that in various writings of your own you have used quite similar ideas or phrases. He does not care and will see it as plagiarism.

The way to avoid this is to make content, as much as possible, 100% original. If you can, try that this percentage of content does not exceed 20%, the lower this percentage, the better for us.

To solve or avoid the problem in online stores you can try doing a no-index (a command that is placed in the meta-tags that tells search engine crawlers not to index that page) or canonical (a snippet of code in HTML format that are responsible for specifying which is the main page of the content requesting indexing) to some URLs. It usually happens in combinations of products.

When you have content less than 300 words:

This type of content of less than 300 words is considered by Google to be of low quality and of little use to the user who visits it, making bounces common. The most immediate solution is to increase the number of words with original and enriching content. It is very difficult for Google to penalize for this action, it would have to be seen as very ill-intentioned.

How to get out of a Penguin penalty?

When you try to trick Google to increase your search engine position by resorting to manipulating the links; Whether you've bought artificial links, engaged in heavy link trading, used link farms, or created manual links following patterns, rest assured you'll be penalized.

To get out of a Penguin penalty, following the step of the tools to find out if Google has penalized me, you must recognize the toxic links, which is a fairly simple process since these links will always use the same text (anchor text) as keywords, they are going to be over-optimized or come from a disreputable site.

After recognizing the links, you must proceed to eliminate them.

The steps you must follow to end these links are:

Remove toxic backlinks in disavow links tool.

  1. Download your link profile through Google Search Console. You can also use tools like MOZ, Ahrefs, Semrush, etc.
  2. Create a .txt file and line up the url or domain where you have that toxic backlink. You can put only the url so that I block only that page or the entire domain in case you want to block the entire web. In the case of url you should only put it but in case of domain you should write: domain:domain.com
  3. Send a search console disavow request by uploading this .txt file to the https://search.google.com/search-console/disavow-links. Since they changed to the new version of search console, the effectiveness of this tool is not 100% proven.

Conclusion for how to know if my website is penalized by google:

Thanks to the advancement of technology, there are various tools to find out if Google has penalized me that detect almost anything, therefore it would be pertinent that you put them into practice to detect harmful links, possible plagiarism, excessive SEO, among others.

It is also worth mentioning that Google will penalize us if we have an SEO that is too perfect, Google's parameters indicate that nothing should be completely optimal but should be somewhere in the middle because those kinds of perfect things are done by robots. As in the case of excess links.

In turn, when it comes to scarce content, we must also have an average. For Google, when there is little content, it considers that it lacks value. But also when there is a lot of content, it is not suitable for users because it is not concrete. The content must have quality, and not only at the content level but also at the grammar and syntax level.

In general, a website that is too perfect in the eyes of Google's parameters can be penalized in the same way as one that has incurred a fault.

On the other hand, you should also know that if you try to circumvent Google to mock some type of penalty, it will be worse for you because you would run a high risk that your website will be removed from its index and placed on its blacklist. For this reason, it is better to follow the rules and with this avoid bad times and all the processes that they entail.

A simpler way (not the most effective): If you see a sudden dip in traffic in the last 1-2 weeks, you have been penalized.

That's not always true and can happen for a number of reasons.
Yeah, but when an update has just happened, and it syncs with the ranking drop, it may be the case. But as said before, it's not the most effective.

do i replace the word yourdomain with the url of my site but without the http:// and the .com at the end as well?
as i removed http:// and the .com from my site url in the site:http://www.yourdomain.com and it
just gabe me this Your search - site:http://www.com - did not match any documents.
but when i put in the http:// and the .com it gave me search results of my site?

Suggestions:

Your domain has not disappeared from the Google index. To check it, place in the search “site:www.yourdomain.com”.

if you make a 301 redirect to a new domain , will it save the site ?
Depends on the niche, domain authority, age of banned domain, number of indexed links before ban...

You can try it if you want but lately Google is improving its artificial intelligence technologies more and more.

As I said before it depends on many factors.

but regardless i searched my site on googke search console and found no errors or problems, and my site appears in numerous search results with different pages so clearly not penalized then.
