Should I focus on one of these methods or try both of them?

Both are very effective techniques, look what works for your site and proceed further.

But both methods require expensive tools? Or am I wrong? For skyscraper, I'm guessing Ahrefs or Semrush? And as for guest blogging lead generation tool like Oxyleads is a way to go, but what else?

Both you can do for free, but it just takes more time.

Doug Cunnington made a good guest post over on Ahrefs about improving the Skyscraper Technique.

The Ahrefs article is a superb refinement to the technique. It's not Guest Posting vs Skyscraper, its the combining of the two that is more effective.
