Don't get too catch up in this topic. Is beyond your control by all means. You may appear in the featured snippet, but also within the Q/A and other snippets. It's preferable but it doesn't depend by any matters, on you, unless you find an adequate volume "question" query that A) Don't have snippet already B) Could have snippet. For example: for the query "wordpress gallery plugin" if there wasn't a featured snippet, an article with the top 10 gallery plugins for wordpress, with a 1. 2. 3. H2 structure, may end as the featured snippet list view with the appropiate authority.
If there are multiple options in the SERPS why yours and not theirs? I'm not 100% sure, maybe Google feels satisfied in there are no clicks after a search? Google feels that it has auto-satisfied the query with the special content snippet? Or after reading the list, there is a high CTR in your result?
But this are questions you can do after going there, meanwhile, as I said, apart from following classic SEO guidelines and satisfying the intent, everything is 100% beyond your control, there is no tip like "having an specific structured data that features more results" or something like that found so far (AFAIK).
