I just submitted a sitemap to a new site of mine, and it gave the message couldn't fetch under status tab after submitting in the new webmaster tools, in the old one it shows pending. Is this a common thing in the new GWTs ? Or is there something wrong? Never seen that message before after submitting in the new one

did you check to see if formatting of the XML sitemap looks ok when you go directly to the Sitemap URL in the web browser?
what would I need to look for ? The sitemap in question was generated by Yoast plugin
Yeah I have done that everything is fine, when you check the sitemap on SC also it checks out fine. But it just won't accept it for-whatever reason. I have done some searching on this problem and in the google forums many others have encountered this problem and to my knowledge there has never been a solution for it found.

It may happened currently sometimes for new website, and for that there is no any specific solutions, just make sure your sitemap should be correct. Waite for some time & try again. It will work fine.

Refresh the page and type sitemap.xml
I have long since done that

i faced the same thing before ,when i tried with some xml sitemap tester then i found errors i made setp and submit its ok now

Have you tried switching back to the 'Old Version' of search console? Think the new one is still a big buggy, re; sitemaps... Worked for me.
Yep tried that. When this problem occurs the old console gives the message of "pending" but it stays like that forever

It's a bug, just give it a week till it refreshes again and it'll be fine. "Could not fetch" in this case means "Pending." I just went through this, 100's of others reporting the same across the net.
