    Hi Guys,

I'm having this error when I submit the sitemap to webmaster tool.

"Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead."

Anyone faced the same problem, then please share the solution.

I am trying from 2 days.

    • I have regenerated the sitemap from online website www.xml-sitemaps.com.
    • Submitted it again to webmaster tool but still have the same error.
Don't know what wrong with the sitemap. I have attached the screenshot of the error page.

Did you send in the actual page of the sitemap?

    Sitemaps need to be XML.
You could use a generator to create a sitemap: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
Or a plugin, if you are using WordPress or some other CMS: http://wordpress.org/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

I can see in your screenshot that the sitemap on your site is indeed an XML file. I've read about this happening before, but I've never encountered the issue myself.

What CMS are you using? I heard one solution is to clear out any caching plugins you're using. If you're using Cloudflare, you'll have to clear your cache from your Cloudflare dashboard.

Another possible solution is to delete the site as a property in your Google Search Console account and add it back in again.

I found this article that mentions how there is or was a Search Console bug when users tried submitting an auto-generated sitemap, but who knows if this is still the case as this article was written in 2009.

Thanks abraarukuk, but I am using the same website to generate the sitemaps.

Zwielicht thanks for replying, my website is in HTML/PHP, using the FTP to update files.

I have removed my websites as property and resubmitted in google search console.
But still not working, tried sitemap from other websites and tools but not working, even my sitemap file is in .xml format.

Tried to find the solution from google but didn't found any helpful answer for my problem.

    :(

This error message will display when the sitemap submitted by you is wrong.

My XML sitemap is working correctly. I know I have added the correct sitemap, but it's not picking it up.

I have tried with the HTML sitemap to just for testing and Google webmaster accepting that one without any error. But I know I have to use the XML sitemap for crawlers to index all my pages.

Can anyone please help me to fix this problem.
