Social sites have a lot more room for gaming I think because new ones come up all the time and they aren't huge monoliths like google with infinitely deep pockets- well they could rise to that like twitter etc but there is some years money making for us in the meantime and new ones come along all the time

Still facing exactly the same problem.. the more effort I put, the more spammy, thin pages push me down!
I cant believe what is happening!!! Is it a bug? Intentional? Penalty for under-optimization? First time facing this situation and I have survived dozens of updates over the years

So what I have gathered from reading these last few pages is that Backlink weight in the ranking system has probably gone up as of this moment maybe the highest it has been in the last couple years ? And that you can have lots of exact match anchors again with not much penalty ? Is this correct ?

I built around 20-25 websites from January `19 till now. I can definitely say it has something to do with backlinks. I had keywords on #15-#35, but since I was building around 2x web 2.0s per day on them, they went to oblivion. At the other hand websites, where I didn't built much backlinks, only here and then, went up in the rankings.

Well the plot thickens. I logged into the Search Console to see how things were looking and there's a lovely message saying that I've been hit with a manual penalty for unnatural links. Curiously, after having a look at the backlink report, it appears to be the case that a shit ton of dodgy links on super spammy domains have been built. Currently in the process of submitting these links to the disavow tool since there aren't any contact details on these sites to have the links removed (and lets face it, they wouldn't anyway).
Pretty fucking pissed off about that, actually. It turns out that one of the other sites in the same niche who is a competitor of mine has had their site links posted on these spammy sites as well and they've also dropped down in the ranks.
What I did find interesting though is that I never received an email from Google about the manual action. A little heads up would have been nice. It's also a site wide penalty, which is seriously annoying.

Interesting .. you are talking about link velocity.. in my case I have been building many backlinks in the last few months. But not for all of my websites
You were hit because of manual penalty due to negative Seo. Hope you recover soon, but it has nothing to do with the algorithm update we are facing here

and I was telling people negative seo is not possible anymore... google has ways to know ok links from spammy links. guess i was wrong.
is it one of those sites that just harvest content from other sites or do you think one of your competitors has done this?

A bit of both to be honest.
In terms of the neg SEO, I firmly believe that it is possible. If someone had to build so much spam that they wrecked their own site, then why can't they do that to others?
I've been in this game for a long time and I'd never have built those links that have been created. It's a major bummer, although I have just purchased the same site name except it's not .com anymore.
The annoying thing is that there was a lot of content on the site. I guess it's time to start rewriting it all. There's some pages I'm going to delete completely and remove them from the index, but others are being done from scratch.
I wouldn't go down the route of 301 the domain, I'd hate to redo all the work and have the slim chance of it being hit with a penalty. I'll be keeping a close eye on it though.

My traffic has gone through the floor today, it's now a quarter of what it was at the start of the month and dropped by half in past 24 hours, all white hat site apart from some manually built blog and forum comments. Thanks again Google.
SEO is looking pretty pointless at this stage, might as well focus on the social media side of things.

I feel right now like I could just purchase an expired domain, place a picture of a steaming turd on in with a keyword in the alt tags and I'd rank no. 1 for that keyword. However if I wrote a 10k word article for that KW on a fresh domain I might hit top 100 if I'm lucky

Don't be so hopeless guys. Google is always evolving their algorithm. It has been shit for a few months now, but it will also be better in the future. Just test, test and test ways, which can trick their "broken" and unstable algorithm now. Google is not giving a fuck about quality right now. Especially in my niche. The most ridiculous is Google is completely shutting their mouth and not giving away any information about what is happening.
My guess is Google wants to make agencies, companies etc. paranoid, so they spend more money on ads. Wouldn't be the first time.
The people who are really fucked are all those agencies, which have to explain the drop of traffic/earnings to their clients, without having any clue by themselves of what the fuck is going on.

So, it's been about a month since we started "bouncing back," things are starting to stabilize... Unfortunately for me, my website "stabilized" at around 70% of my previous traffic (pre August 2018)... What are you seeing? Has anyone had a full recovery?
