Google update again?!

dammit google, always making us work for the money. finance niche similar fluctuation but seeing that since start of the year tbh

I have a health website that was attacked last year, Negative SEO, after this update I've lost almost 80% of traffic. Even if I used the disavow tool the rankings got worse.

On another health-related website, with high-quality content and a couple of hundreds of quality backlinks I've seen a decrease of 50%. Mainly my money making keywords where affected. I have affiliate links and adsense on this website and until this updated everything was growing steady. I believe we should wait for a few days and after to take conclusions.

This update seems to be related to age of the webiste and authorship authority

i didnt mean forever but reacting without more data means that if a recovery does occur then the changes made could negate a rise that would have happened. This health niche talk is coincidence, because two of my sites are good quality IM related sites and they have taken a bashing with >30% traffic loss to date and some keywords bombed out past p100.

I have a cosmetic health niche, what they have done for our main terms is changed the whole layout of the serps. Rather then just paid ads, shopping ads then organic it now goes;
Paid ads -> shopping ads-> map pack-> (not relevant they have Random companies offering similar products and services ) then videos > then recommend search phrases then finally we get to the organic results and the top 3 are now big magazines or media pages showing some limp article page. Then it has our site and the comp that actually offer the services and products. Organic so far down. Currently lost 2/3 of traffic. This is how the serps looked back in December/jan for these terms. I’m hoping it will go back. Piss poor result page.

It's said this update will finish in the middle of this week

This was tweet from last week.

So we will see how this will settle in 2 days.

I notice huge gains for repurposed auction domain/301 type sites. Did anyone else notice the same?

It goes with "authority domains gaining with this update" hypothesis.

Some facts from a different branch: Video gaming sector news sites (one with gaming in general, two others specialized in mmo gaming and gaming hardware with tipps - ought to be "authorities" but Google on 1st August decided they are not)

- Huge drop in news traffic (30-50%),
- Drops are connected with the video carousel change mid june (the vid carousel on top, news carousel below: deadly for news sites)
- Video carousel results not always matching the query
- No active link building (PBN... what's that? We are naive stupid white hats)
- Articles we update regularly rose in traffic (top ten lists for games or hardware, release lists, product comparisons, product tests)
- We publish each day the same amount of news but our visibility in newsbox dropped (AMP as well) - it's not a freshness thing. It's authority.
- During the first three days of the update the news box showed news older than 20 hours and ignored newer ones.

My traffic is still down, and I am starting to become nervous.

Some additional observations of the traffic patterns (google analytics)
-traffic dropped for about 30-50%
-time on site increased severely (from 1:20 minute, to almost 1:50m), which can be correlated to the fact above
-bounce rate about the same (??)
-getting a lot more comments on my articles as before (??) <-- this one haunts me TBH
-revenue dropped.

So it seems that now i get more quality, but less quantity traffic.

Also, what I've noticed about specific keywords is the following:
-random out-of-nowhere sites now rank before me
-for some keywords i'm still on first page (better ranks than webmd, medindia etc _authorities_)
-the random pages that topped my positions all have "about author" page highly exposed. But some of those folks (owners of websites) clearly write in the "about author" section that they're not professionals of any sort (they're just bloggers like me).

Really confusing. I still hope this is due to a flux due to new algo kicking-in.

i was thinking about active link building activity might be a negative for this round. But at the same time, we have couple of people in this thread saying that they are only doing white hat, which means pretty much no link building. so not sure if there is a correlation or not

one thing that i want to add, one of my pages is very competitive has held its number 1 ranking, because i am not doing anything with it anymore!!! no link building.

Anyone who have drops, does your site had ssl (https) or not?

I think the update is more to do with backlinks than anything onpage. Unless there’s more information about the update than I’m aware of?

I don't think this update is focused on links. I'm seeing ultra stupid spam sites got on 1st page. Sites with poor site structure got hit aswell. Still we need more data to draw any conclusion

Maybe. I know you can't go on what Google say about updates but what they said about it not being to do with quality of site and that you cant do anything, made me think its more factors that people shouldnt be able to affect (ie backlinks) if they are following google guidelines.

Also, I got a few sites with very clean link profiles and they have not been affected. But some of my other sites with more bh tactics have.

But like you said, I guess we do need more info + to wait until everything has settled down and also until there is a correction.

Just got done checking a handful or projects i work on this is what i have found.

My Company site - Completely White hat work

Our rankings have increased across the board including an increase in 12 positions for our main keyword which is big for us. I have also seen a 20% increase in traffic.

Affiliate Sites - Grey hat work

I have a handful of affilate sites running at the min which i am doing grey hat work on some of these have moved up and some have moved down. Overall it looks like im actually losing traffic across all of these but im going leave them a week see if they settle then look at implementing some fixes

To be honest i don't think much has changed i believe its just Google adding to its already existing factors and putting more advanced parameters in place to pick up on black hat work better. We know they are always changing and to be honest as long as you aren't doing anything to blatant you should be fine.

Well thats hard to believe as one of my sites has way stronger backlinks than several of the sites that have dumped me out of my long term positions. At this stage there seems to be no one factor that this cluster*uck can be attributed to. One of the sites that now outranks me has a load of hidden content on the homepage.
Hopefully google will rectify this as they have actually broken something that worked ok for the most part. Also, noticed in the loans niche (another site) that maps pack results are now in place for some mega keywords . Completely useless.
