I have a bit more information and trends across sites and a few clients and niches I follow.
Quality Shake Up
This update appears to be a lot of 'quality' and 'authorship' changes.
Remember google authorship? The easily gamed 'if we know who you are all your stuff ranks better' thing they had? The major trend sites I track is swinging back into the direction of 'if we know you...'. Unique about me page sites are doing quite better.
I saw a drop in sites in a few verticles (not my own) related to health. The biggest changes were fairly broad stroke. I saw other sites (with a clearly skilled SEO working on them) shake down the top ten. Onpage perfect, a few great links from huge sites, but unqualified author.
SEO Common Trends
Different link building tactics used on all sites I checked. My main approaches (shared on bhw) moved down top ten on several sites. So did PBN only sites, 301 redirect 'business buying' sites, PIN sites, etc.
Basically, every major tactic has shaken down a bit. What moved up were normally sites already doing well and 'deserved' to be higher. This is always debatable. But some sites really are superior I saw move up.
Surprise Jumps
My biggest suprises were current sites ranked 100 or worse jumping to page one.
Sites with 'bad' SEO done or spam. A couple of my test sites jumped up. On page 'perfect' but different link methods used.
My test sites using off the wall on page in large did not shoot up.
My Biggest Drops
So far three sites took a hit majorly for me. Many moved down top ten. Those that took a big hit all were:
- Selling something (affiliate or own product)
- No clear author (admin author, no profile pic or page)
- Content wasn't the best. Perfect on page and site speed, etc. But it honestly doesnt read the best and has fluff.
The slight drops had none of the three main problems. Better sites moved up.
What will I be doing?
Re - tooling some content and adding author pages.
My other note is that sites that were hit hard did not vanish from serps. They dropped back a few pages. If a kw had 10 pages of well optimized results sites moved to page 9 or 10.
That makes it look to me like a quality update - meaning google is being honest. A core update.
The spam ranking? Makes no sense.

As with all Google updates, don't panic and don't overreact. Let the dust settle then make changes. This has happened before and will happen again. Just do nothing.

The only 'changes' I am making are those I should have done a long time ago. Regardless of an update.
Thanks for the insight. I run a health website and agree with most of what you've said. However, I have noticed some supplement company websites are now appearing above me for certain keywords, and their articles are not as well written or researched, and they are clearly just trying to sell their supplement within and at the end of the article. Yet they are now appearing ahead of me. It doesn't make sense. Are you saying your websites that sell something like this HAVE taken a huge hit?

The new Google algorithm is putting more emphasis on quality word content. Google can't rely on mostly images to tell what your site is about. Recommend putting some original blog articles on your site with your targeted long tail keywords. Show Google you are an authority on your niche.

The health sites I track (not all my own) in large part remained on page one.
The sites clearly selling affiliate products or their own products mostly moved down top ten. But still in top ten.
For health sites I only track large sites run by either:
1. Fitness Experts/ Gurus
2. Doctors
3. 'Authority' Sites
For the inferior content popping up my gut tells me it is related to the random spam popping up. In a lot of niches bad backlink profile spam is shooting up.
Every niche and keyword are different now.
I would suggest waiting. Google has a good way of fixing issues while the update rolls out. It isnt done and most likely significant drops are temporary. This isnt penguin or panda. So things will come back. The best onpage and off page will win. Give it time.
I see. Thanks. I'm a nutrition expert and my website sells affiliate products and my own products. I've been slowly transitioning to more of my own products and less affiliate products. And I still appear on the first page for search terms but I've dropped down like you said. But I'm glad you think it will come back. I've never been affected by one of these updates. My traffic has always increased or stayed the same. So I hope you're right. Thanks again.

So that's the weird stuff I'm seeing in ranking fluctuations. My authority / local business had weird fluctuations and traffic on low end of typical range. I'll see tomorrow I guess. One affiliate site saw jumps in ranks but ranking the wrong page for keywords. One aff site dropped out of first page and then back to low end of first page - not sure what to make of it.
I'll wait a week, throw some social signals and put up fresh articles and videos.

I dropped a little in rank on a few keywords. I have both those tags. Don't think they are related as I maintained my spots on other keywords

on most of my website rankings dropped alot in the past 2 weeks...
one website had no dropping
all websites the same (wordpress, yoast, 1000-1500 word-articles)... only the one with no droppings at all has 1 (one) article with 15'000 words!
