You need to do a bit of analytic work around your site - track the source of your traffic, track KWs that bring the most traffic, track their positions etc.

My advice would be to look for the KWs that brough the major traffic and then look for them in the SERPs and try figuring out what happened.

You didn't do any SEO? So then how were you ranking? No backlinks at all? That sounds doubtful. Check your links now with something like Ahfres and let us know what you see.

My One Plus for Same Suggestion. Also Do check when was Last Update you done on your site and was your site any Season Base site? Like Summer time It was Getting 500 and In Winter It dropped?

Was your website penalised? Did you change something in your website? We need more information to help you diagnose the issue.

Also, Safex's suggestion about your website being seasonal may be correct, also. Since the website is only a year old, this would have been the first time you would have experienced a drop in traffic due to the season.

In Google Webmaster Tools, go to "manual actions". If your website has been penalised, a message will show up there.

Did you ever heard about natural linkbuiding, not every site that appears in Google is doing seo.

The most common reason for losing traffic is penalties. That's the culprit in most cases. So, what you have to do is find out whether your site has been penalised or not.

    - Log into your GWT account and look in the messages section. If there aren't any manual spam action messages, check your daily impressions to see if it has decreased significantly. If it has, your site has probably been penalised.

    - To confirm if it's a penalty, plug your site into Semrush and check where your site previously ranked and where it currently ranks for your top 10 keywords. Previous positions are usually displayed within brackets.

    Additional Checks
    - Over-optimised site?
    - Fall in keyword search volume?
    - Deindexed pages/articles?

Well, this either looks like a penalty or your competition skyrocketed in just few days and dominated the money-making KWs.

Anyways, filter GWMT from July to 11th August and look for the KWs with the most clicks and CTR. Then look at them now (last 7 days).

Some people here are so used to doing black hat SEO (buying links) that they forget about natural link building.:)

That's a huge drop in traffic. My bets are going to his website being penalised. If it were the competition, he would have seen more of a gradual change than a huge drop in traffic like that unless one of his competitors completely dominated him in the SERPs, but even then I don't think it would have dropped that much over the course of a few days.

I have heard of people ranking with little or no backlinks by just having tons of quality content. It can be done.

I actually had the opposite happen to me a few weeks ago. I had a huge spike in traffic from search engines, but it only lasted 1 day before my traffic went back to normal.

May be your competitor might outranked you. Do you do SEO to your website? Plot your on-page and off-page optimization well and future-proof.

But do you think a solitary competitor could have caused him to lose that much traffic? I could understand it if he had five competitors who outranked his website and pushed him to the second page of the SERPs, but only one? Considering his average position is 10 or less, I still don't think this is the problem.

Okay, so we can rule out any manual penalties to your website, but what about algorithmic penalties? Have any of your pages been deindexed recently leaving only a few of them indexed?
