Have no doubt that it's going to happen (if it's not in the works already), but I assume Google is just going to give you the option to opt out of the SERP. Who knows.

Here's a very strange idea that suddenly occurred to me. I use the word virus quite often in my articles (related to computer viruses, of course) and could it be that the dumb AI thinks that it's related to COVID and throttles the traffic because I don't have an authority in the medical field?
There are a lot of sites affected in all niches that have probably never mentioned virus so I doubt it
Although I think the AI is dumb but smart enough to see the difference between different types of viruses. There are hundreds of them ... so if you don't have COVID or COVID-19 or anything related to it in your article, you're safe.
You're probably right, but there are 78 pages, three months have passed and still nobody has any idea what's going on and how to fix this mess.

Haven't recovered a bit. Before update, traffic was 400UV per day and now it's down to only 50-60UV per day.

May 2020 which I believe dates back to the silent Jan 9th, 2020 update (don't confuse it with core update late January after the 9th) won't be easy. If you weren't hit on Jan 9th they got you in May 2020, as they were paying with that 'filter' turning it ON and OFF in March and April and finally implemented it in May 2020 core update. I'm playing with different factors to see how it works. I won't be posting any details here as G is known for monitoring forums like this to see what people are up to and if they have figured out what the 'thing' was all about and I'm not going to make it easy for them. So instead of waiting for someone to hand you a solution take some risk and play around to see how the G algo handles it. If you lost traffic you have absolutely nothing to lose by switching things around no matter how crazy it may seem.

Hi, I was hit with the MAY update but not too badly. Google has started fixing up things and I've started recovering from June and now I'm almost back to normal.
What did I do?

- New Posts
- Improved Site Speed
- Disabled ads when update happened and enabled them again in June.
It's been proven many times that site speed (as of this writing) has little impact on SEO. Unless it's like 3-5 min. If it's less then a min. you'll be fine and move on to other metrics, I'm saying this because I don't want you to waste your time on site speed. Think of it this way, if site speed was a major factor in G May 2020 update by improving it we all be posting here how fast our sites had recovered. Unfortunately, it's not the case.
As for ads, as long as you don't overdo it, again, you'll be fine. I still see sites ranking in the top 10 loaded with ads hindering user experience. So take that with a big grain of salt.
New posts, sure they can rank providing they target new keywords, whether they recover your lost traffic, I'm not sure about that. Let me put it this way, if you were ranking on the top for blue shoes, created a new post about 'sandals', and see overall traffic increase it may be because of the 'sandals' post. So you see traffic increase but you're not getting back what you have lost.
Last but not least, good links do matter but if you were hit with May 2020 update you have to figure out what was the problem, fix it and new quality links will give you a nice boost!

How high is your keyword density? I can't say for certain but looks like lower, close to nothing is better now .
I have a site that got hit in May and I had to change some of the text (was testing different affiliate offer). Unintentionally the KW density went from 1.05% to 0.44. It's a 2 word phrase KW . About the same number of words and everything else.
Pre-May was a stable #4 for over a year , than after the update got pushed to page 6. After the on page changes it went back to page 1 in a few days and it's been #2-3 since.
No idea if they rolled back the update or the on page changes did it... Fucking g00gle

I think that keyword density was a major factor in the latest update, but not as a % or anything like that, it's more sophisticated and I imagine taking into account anchor text one is linking to their website.
One of my posts is targeting 5 or 6 closely related keywords. Most of the keywords lost ranking except the one that is mentioned just once in the meta description. It's so weird, it holds 6th position (5k monthly search volume), and is mentioned once in meta description and nowhere else in the post. All other keywords have lost ranking and are on the 5th-6th page of SERP.
And I have another post which I really don't care about, it's about 2,000 words, the keyword I target is mentioned 3 times throughout the post, never build any links to it and it's ranking top 5-6 for the past 4-5 years (search volume is about 6k a month) and was never hit with any G update while my other posts were. It ranks as stable as you can imagine. Try to figure out this one ...

yea, for me I noticed is yesterday and today suddenly zzzz drop , next week it seem back on track

Totally agree. Speed almost has no impact. My initial page speed was 64, after many updates and wasting time, I managed to get it to 90+. There was no improvement of my ranking at all.
If you look at all the pages that rank on page 1 & 2. mostly their speed below 50. There are some below 20.
Even if you check Google Developer pages, the speed is around 60. They don't do what they preached.
