Google releasing a large update today

it seems that lately you have been doing lots of onpage optimization. do you go to GSC and have google index those page or just let google take its own time and crawl it again as they see fit?

I leave it, the next day it gets indexed.

Still losing keywords. Big Keywords as well. On Authority Domain. On almost brand new - going upppppp

So my personal experience.

5 Sites (same niche) - (variations between each other, different writer) - (All 5 clean sites (Hand-coded, no templates, no WordPress)) - Content Prior google update: ~ 2300 words
(ALL 5 DROPPED. 60%) - Pagespeed insights: > 95/100

After the google update,
All 5 sites improved content to 3000-3500 WITH SUBSTANTIAL content. like, really, really substantial. (Content, is not just dropped like text.. but each 500 words has it's own "section" on the page.)

1 site recovered from the google update going higher, the other 4 stayed the same (60% loss average). (The very first site that I updated the content to is the one that recovered and surpass its traffic before but
the other 4 stayed the same (the procedure on each one of them it's the same.), just 1 recovered.

Conclusion: I don't know what else to do to recover the other sites, the procedure is the same.
are those all 4 sites share the same server?

It may have something to do with backlinks, the site that has recovered has better quality links, less or more (don't know exactly just guessing here) optimized anchor text. In this case, I'd definitely look into backlinks.

After this update, I started working on a new shop in the same niche. I went for an easy keyword 'best place to buy KEYWORD'. I am on page 3 now, my page title contains the keyword and my 400 word homepage contains it twice. Every website that ranks above me does not mention this longtail keyword at all.

I have noticed this too. It appears that sites that rank don't have the exact keyword 'best place to buy KEYWORD'. However, I have also noticed that those who rank have the keyword broken in sentences. For example, 1st sentence may have 'keyword and buy' the next one 'best and place' obviously the sentences have to make sense. So you might try to break your long-tail keyword into two sentences and see if it'll work. Just make sure that the sentences aren't too long and long enough for G to show it in a snippet.

Of course. Different Class A (IPS) for each one of the 5.

I don't think it's the quality of the backlinks.. because my procedure is the same for each one of the sites....

I have 2 ecommerce sites that are not yet fully functional and this is what happened:

The sites have bad backlink profile, mainly web 2.0 and both sites are in the same niche.

Aliexpress product descriptions, so very little on page SEO done, missing meta and other tags/info... as you can see not something that you can call "have put a lot of work in".

So what I did:

I connected both sites via mega menu backlinks - site wide links.

Both sites now shoot each other hundreds of backlinks and guess what, one of them is on page 2 and ranking for 2 x main keywords of 25K and keep going up.

This is insane. Completely trash backlink profile, cheap 1 $ PBNs, web 2.0 and site wide link from exactly the same site with same age just different domain and it goes up daily.

The site is pretty trash but 5-6 months old.. i dont even have payment gateways activated.

Now at the same time, site that I have worked with over a year and spent thousands, including editorial articles on major news networks takes hits every day and is unable to recover.. SEMRush indicator is going crazy since yesterday and again my good site is losing while the crap ones are gaining.. i lose even when the indicator is green, minor gains that are followed by huge drops.. nothing makes any sense.

Good thing here is that i have tons of Shopify crap sites available.. Ill try to shoot the worst shit i can find from bhw link sellers and will let you know how it goes...

I have lots of hope in my new strategy :D

I've just found one PBN from someone (doesn't matter who). xx articles (with links ofc) daily, spun content, generally sh*t.

I've checked websites that was linked in April and earlier. Every site got nice boost from May update. I was scared of buying cheap PBN's links. Now I will make a test, on one of the worst site. Maybe it works lol.
I am confused.

I did ask yesterday what info people want me to share and I got no answer so I can only try.
Today, as of yesterday it seems there maybe a bug or blip.
For 1 keyword I bounce from page 3 to page 6-7, this is for the main keyword 'blue widgets' on blue-widgets.org.uk. other keywords are showing little bits of flux but nothing hugely abnormal.
On page I think I have ticked all the boxes correctly, keywords in titles, no shady onsite tactics etc. Homepage has 6500 words, might be too many? But density is soft, 1 natural phrase just over 2% with the next 2 word phrase being 0.84% and 'blue widgets' is 0.38% so not overcooked it with spam.
Taking it away from me for a moment I saw someone above mentioning keywords in the article. Now a frustrating thing for me trying to work all this out is a competing site that dominates the SERPS. Say we all review various companies 'blue widgets' so this site ranks very well for just about every company they review, so '*generic company* Free widget' they rank pretty much on page 1 for every one. Now, I am not being bitter or anything but their content is OK, nothing brilliant, just ok. I am being a bit long winded but I recall not long ago a webmaster hangout with John Mueller from google and someone had been asking why their site wasn't ranking and the first thing he said was the phrase wasn't mentioned on the page. A lot of these competitor pages don't mention their phrase on the page either, 1 starts their title tag with it but that is not, not once in the content on the page but ranks superbly. It just doesn't make sense.
I keep saying it, I think they (google) now have some sort of filter that is holding pages/sites back but what is triggering it I have no idea. Any little changes I have done onpage have seemed to have no difference at all.
BTW if any experts want to have a look at my site to see if they can spot any patterns feel free to PM me

After a big drop in May. I did a press release last month. The company distributed the PR to 200+ sites, high DA sites but very low traffic. I think it's a PBN. A few days later, my rank dropped from 18 to 48.
I'm not sure if this is due to the PBN or just Google. No I'm disavowing all the links.

So this was you?! :D

I noticed a few new sites, no DA, a few backlinks, minimum content coming from dropship sites.

But Rank 8-15 on certain keywords.

I suspect it was because it's on Shopify. Somehow Google must passed down the juice from Shopify

Would like to see more of your update

If you have the time check their anchor text profile. If they use the exact keywords in anchor text this is why they might be able to rank high with very little keywords on-page.

As for this

Say we all review various companies 'blue widgets' so this site ranks very well for just about every company they review, so '*generic company* Free widget' they rank pretty much on page 1 for every one. Now, I am not being bitter or anything but their content is OK, nothing brilliant, just ok. I am being a bit long winded but I recall not long ago a webmaster hangout with John Mueller from google and someone had been asking why their site wasn't ranking and the first thing he said was the phrase wasn't mentioned on the page.

I have noticed that too. One of my posts targets a product with different keyword variations, let's say 'red widget' , 'blue widget' and green widget'. The funny thing is that 'green widget' is mentioned once in the meta description and ranks #7. All the other keywords lost ranking and are on 5th and 6th pages of SERP. And I only mention them 2 or 3 times throughout the post. The post is long so the keyword density very low.

I keep saying it, I think they (google) now have some sort of filter that is holding pages/sites back but what is triggering it I have no idea. Any little changes I have done onpage have seemed to have no difference at all.

That's what I think too. For me, it started on Jan 9th, 2020. In March and April, the site had recovered by itself. For about two weeks each time. And in May tanked again. It looked like they were turning that 'filter' ON and OFF.

Let's keep the diagnostic.
Now, do you guys have setup the "Web progressive apps"? (All my sites aren't optimized for Web Progressive Apps)

My sites ALL has been with this score before the update. So I refuse to think it's about the page speed score.

Should I start optimizing also the "Progressive web app"?

Page speed is a ranking factor but not critical and won't send your page from # 1 or #5 to the 5th or 6th page of SERP just because it loads a second or two longer. Can't tell you how many posts I have seen on this and other forums claiming that all you have to do with May 2020 update is to improve your page speed. Totaly wrong unless it takes like 5 min. to load your page.

And BTY, I still see posts ranking high for some keywords without HTTPS even though HTTPS is a ranking factor. I guess they have other things going on that over-ride the HTTPS ranking factors that get them to the top.

I noticed that some of you have seen some traffic improvements and, while I did see some stabilization in the keywords bleeding (on SemRush), my traffic is still decreasing. I am starting to think that this time it is the pandemic and not Google that's screwing up with our websites even more.

yes traffic is keep declining , any way to stop it? keyword also keep dropping
