Google me, possible money or possible fail.

Sorry, had to use the cowboy hats. I pretty much keep on the bleeding edge of information and I was listening to this week in tech when kevin rose said that google me was going to be the new facebook. I would love to see a new hunting ground myself. Facebook locks everything down, bullshit hoops and they can bring your work and life to a very hard halt.

We all know there is money to be made out there but I would rather work with the devil I know then some asshat that sells everyones information and screws with your security.

Yet another failed product launch by google to come. I will have my popcorn on standby to watch how it falls from the sky in blazing flames of anti-glory.

Google has been trying to get social networking off the ground since 2004. They locked down India and Brazil pretty good with it, but not the western world. That was Orkut in case anybody forgot.

Then they took a shot with Friend Connect. Bet you never even heard of that one. Another fail.

Then they came out with their Twitter competitor Buzz. Anybody else noticed there isn't a single Google post/message without them needing to mention Google Buzz? Yet another product limping along in the googosphere.

The scary thing about google and social networking is how they might use those signals to impact their organics. I just don't care for that level of complexity to start coming into SEO.

On the other hand, it might just be yet another web2.0 property to gain some profile lines from.

G produces supreme technical products, but yet to come up with a good app for a non-techies. I'm rather opposite of being an Apple fan, but I'm sure as soon as they come up with own social network (and it's just a matter of time) it's going to be a huge success.

You forgot Dodgeball - spend a good penny acquiring a thriving mobile social network and basically killed it.

They have the ability to leverage their traffic to get a network going, but it would require throwing it up on the search page and promoting it via Google and Blogspot. They should have a link across all those pages that says something like "Add to your Google Me profile"..that would churn out users who would end up using it. There's so many ways they could exploit their popularity to jumpstart their attempts but they often fail to do it.

The problem with google is then understand computers better than they understand people. This is why the social arena as eluded them time and again.

All google has to do is handle peoples sensitive information better than facebook and they will be the favorite by a landslide.

Google has tons of analytic data to make the rival platform robust with features, it is said that facebook has increased it server count to 60,000. In one of Google clouds it self contains like 200K servers. They have the infrastructure and hardware to make facebook look like a wp blog.

what they really need is to motivate people to change from facebook to google me
if what they can offer is only more privacy, it won't be enough, they will need very good new functions which aren't on facebook yet, they have to offer (a lot) more, if they can't, they'll fail for sure
facebook is a lot more than a just social network by now where you just liaise with your friends, lot of people are playing those shitty games there etc., google (or anybody) will have a very hard time to convince people to change and they have to make the change totally painless, i mean you should be able to import all your friends with one click and so on

if Google me will not delete accounts . that's Good, i will forget facebook and use google me

i go for fail. they didn't do well with the buzz, fb is a whole lot stronger than twitter in my place so i doubt they'll beat it.

Fail many times doesn't mean they will fail forever.

Let's wait and see.

They already have functions they could add to a social network platform that could rival facebook.Google Docs, Lab Tools,Webmaster tools,Google Wave for one, is something they could definitely incorporate. Also Ubiquitous login, is something that windows 8 will feature which is face recognition login, through a webcam of course built-in or usb. These type of revolutionary web 4.0 experiences is what it will take to convince people to change without looking back. It will be a classic battle of David and Goliath with google being David and we all know what happend to Goliath, so dont sleep on the G.
