Google January 2020 Algorithm Update

Hi everyone,

wanted to share with other SEO folks here my findings so far for Google's Jan 2020 Algo update (based on my tests and checks); please feel free to add in your findings as well, that'd be great:

- I've seen 1st page rankings went out of top 10 pages, disappeared completely; some of them came back, some did not
- seems that higher auth websites are getting more rankings, while lower auth sites are losing them
- old websites that had good content and no new backlinks are getting new extra kws ranked; I suspect this is more related to the variety of kws and content on those pages
- pages with duplicate content got removed from index; seems that duplicate content is really taking a hit this time
- low quality aged websites are ranking higher than before; age seems to be playing an important role even more now (not news)

Would be great to hear some other members take on this.

Some of my results are based on smaller sites and i can't say 100% they are accurate as they are based on some specific niches.

PS: side note, keep testing as that will clear up the fuzziness around this : )

Not much movement for me. Some of my rankings increased in December so hopefully it stays that way.

Again: it's all findings related to the fact that Google are constantly making the search results more accurate and trying to provide as high quality as possible.

If you make a user-friendly platform with high quality content, you are going to crush SEO. If you don't, you're not (at least on long-term).

I'm curious if any of you have seen no change in keywords ranking after Jan. 7th 2020 but lost traffic?

I have not seen anything new , for sites that gained new organic kws rankings i saw increase in organic traffic, and viceversa.

If you "lost traffic" because of no kws change it can also mean that there is more organic traffic going to the other positions on top of you, or that their CTR is better than yours - just a quick top of mind thought.

Does embedding stuff from other social media sites get counted as duplicacy???

Depends how you see it or check this. some social sites don't even have the posts indexed. But the content you see in social media sites at least in my tests should be unique; there is a factor that can check for duplicate content , for instance content that you copy paste from your blog and put it into your social media posts - that is nothing new, but it's not actually "value" added to the social media posts. if it'd be a short summary or some quotes, that would work.

Just remember that social signals do matter and are taken into account, but they are not the only ones. also some would argue that lots of social signals would get the needle moving, and yes that is true - depending on the niche, competition etc. hope that did not make you more confused : )
