So I don't know anything about a VPS but I do have a website with shared hosting that I like and don't want to move, but I want to start playing around with VPS. I looked up amazon's, but it scares me that I might get into the paid version before I know what I did wrong. So I signed up with google. They say they will let me know before I do anything that would cost me money.

So bottom line, I have a brand new shiny Google Cloud Platform (free for ever version) f1-micro Micromachine type with 0.2 virtual CPU, 0.60 GB of memory, backed by a shared physical core. 0.2 0.60 4 (16 in Beta) 3 max total PD size (TB).

I know that I can't install WordPress, so what can I do to try and learn the platform? Any other web apps that someone that doesn't know a ton about VPS can install to play around with?

You get 300$ free trial credit with google and you can install wordpress.

    https://console.cloud.google.com/la...-launchpad/wordpress?project=wordpress-168021

Just deploy this and u will get a IP with wordpress installed, you can later create a DNS zone and point it to your domain:

    https://cloud.google.com/dns/quickstart

You need to search for some tutorials tho, it's a little difficult to access ftp and you have to give some permissions with SSH.
It's not that hard but you have to search a little for every problem you encounter, I actually moved my domain 2 days ago and it works amazing (took me like 4-5 hours!

I'm getting increasingly fecked off with my current hosts being slow as hell. I've crushed the crap out of my sites with caching and whatnot but still only score 23/100 on pagespeed insights.

I'm seriously considering moving to Google Cloud. It looks a bit of a headmess trying to migrate though, and I used to be a fully fledged webhost!

Amazing in what way? I have less than twenty sites and none get more than 2,000 uniques a month because they're very targeted niches. I'm being crippled by my sites running incredibly slowly at the moment. Namecheap claim it's nothing to do with them, but the five sites I have with them get no more than 5k uniques a month and are highly cached and optimised wordpress sites with no more than a few tens of posts on each site.

16 second response time and pagespeed insights score of 23/100 average. What the hell?

Some of the sites I have with Namecheap are killing it in terms of rankings, but I just know that if they got faster I'd be crushing the serps!

I don't know about that., but I can't find any solid pricing.

If it was 2k a month it would be utterly pointless for anyone other than big companies.

As speed was my issue I installed a premium cache plugin (not W3) and set up CDN. I can only do CDN with JS and CSS (not images) due to the theme I'm running, but it still made a HUGE difference to speed.

Hard to believe that there is such slow hosting provider , what exact reports you receive from G Pagespeed insights?

They were mostly critical of the lack of caching. I was using W3 but it wasn't making much difference. Setting up CDN helped in a big way. As is often the case with some hosts, the sites didn't used to be slow but 'something' happened that caused them to slow down. Then the host suspended my account for using too much server memory. I was not happy. If I'm being generous I'd say the overall outcome was good because it forced me to stop being lazy and to optimise the sites properly.

W/o proper optimization even the most simpliest wordpress website will end up using more resources :)

Sometimes I think back to when I hand-coded sites with nothing more than static html and a bunch of server side includes. Man, those sites were FAST! :)
