Obviously, if you have some money to spend on ads and you are creative enough to do a good SEO campaign, this is the most confortable way to get leads.
And even more comfortable is to get from referrals, something that is not up to you at least in SEO world (because it's difficult that your results talk for you unless you own an impressive PBN and you know how to manipulate/coerce your clients, which they may unlikely recommend you if you do it wrongly)
But there are other alternatives, like freelancing marketplaces like BHW itself, and also doing the right cold approach through multiple sources, including Linkedin.

Yes, there are many sellers on BHW who have made a name for themselves. I have to learn a lot to be one of them in future.

Definitely a referral from a satisfied client is the best way to get new seo clients marketing is secondary.

It will be a better approach to build some authority in the active professional forum like BHW {or any other quality forum like BHW, for that matter}. Once people start knowing your name and brand then you can launch your BST.
It takes time to do this, but it is worth the efforts.
Participating in a small closed community is always better than spending money in the huge unknown ocean of online advertising where people do not even know you.

i think the best approach to get SEO clients is through SEO of course, it directly shows that you have the strength to show on the serp top rank.
you can literally send them your ranking proof and i'm sure they will be convinced to work with you.
if you think some of the keywords are too hard to rank, then start with local SEO, that's easier to rank.
BHW is the really good starting place to get you some SEO clients.

Marketing, cold-emailing & referrals from satisfied clients. Moreover, if you plan to sell your service through BST on BHW, be active on the forum and participate more in the discussion threads, so you can get leads through your signature.
