Have you thought of using on page optimisation to improve your ranking? I'm thinking, internal links which include your keywords, optimising images for your keywords, including your keyword in the meta title, meta description, H tags, bold/italics and naturally sprinkled throughout your page. Obviously you don't want to go overboard, but I do still find these techniques really work.

Its more a matter of quality than quantity.
You can move to page one with one quality niche backlink, or you'll be on same spot with 20 low quality backlinks. I suggest you try to grab one or more quality links within your niche (preferably)
Metrics such as PR, alexa rank, content quality, etc. matter.
