is there a free (or very very affordable) way to turn my hostgator hosted website to a https website with a SSL certification?
Cause I get google messages saying I need https when asking for password/credit card data...

How about for GoDaddy ?
Is $12 a year unreasonable? If you're paying $7 for an article then I'd say a legit SSL is worth it.

Lets encrypt can be autorenewed if you can install a script on the server. Also folks have gotten letsencrypt to work on shared hosting.
