Hi,

Are there any free directory backlinks which are still worth having in 2018?

Obviously most engineers are quick to dismiss them, but if directories were entirely negative - they logically would have gone the way of the dinosaurs yet people are still building them and paying for them

Can anyone share more information on the topic?

Thank-you for your input

For SEO purposes I would say that 99.9% of them are completely worhtless. They may however drive some direct traffic, but lets face it, there are only a small handful of directories that people actually browse / search for a service or a company, the rest are just junk that get no real visitors.

Thank-you for your honesty and input.

Could they be used as part of an SEO strategy to increase the number of Class C IP addresses? So where a site already has some good authority links and alot of link juice, could a few directories be used to pad out the number of referring domains?

Honestly I think Google are smarter than that nowadays. Whilst diversyfing your link portfolio is still important, padding it out with low quality links won't give you much benefit in my opinion. I've seen sites with very few links outrank others with hundreds of diverse links, simply because the few links were exceptionally high quality from trusted and authorative site.

It's still up for debate, but personally I think links from directories that aren't overly spammy won't neccesarily hurt your rankings, but i wouldn't invest much time in getting them either.

Big sites like yell.com in the UK. And also some niche directories might be worth getting a link on.

I guess some of those types are ok to sprinkle in but I’d agree that generally speaking directories aren’t worth a lot.

I don't know why a lot of people hate on niche directory websites. I think they are useful as foundational backlinks and creating a good mixture of no/do-follow links as well as helping create a natural and clean looking anchor text profile.

Forget the directory link and go for PBN. Take a look on others webmaster forum. There a lot directory site owner who abandon the projects and let the domain expired.
