Does anybody have this experience with boosting instagram posts where they get the intended audience (in my case USA followers) to follow the account but after you stop boosting, the followers don't engage with any of the organic content? It's as if the followers don't exist.

I'm in OFM and wanted to grow fast so I boosted posts on an account right from the start and after about 8-10k followers with a 97% USA audience, I stopped boosting but none of the new organic posts were reaching the followers. It's as if the followers weren't really there and the account/views was the same thing as 0 followers. After some consistent organic posting, my posts ended up showing to other unwanted audiences like Indonesia, not USA.

Does anyone know what and how this happens? I asked around and someone mentioned they do a "cooldown" boost period where they reduce the amount spent boosting slowly overtime to prevent this. Does anyone have any insight on all this?

Ah, right. This is frustrating, but super common and makes perfect sense.
It's not that these people are bad followers, it's that the system is working exactly as designed. Let me explain why this happens and where the problem lies.
Instagram's broken mechanics show your promoted post to people its algorithm considers likely to engage with that type of content. The interaction the algorithm looks for is a like, a quick comment, or, ideally, a follow. That's the metric that matters to promotion: getting the "follow" click. Once that person follows you, for the algorithm, the transaction is complete. Your goal of gaining a follower and its goal of gaining a customer aligned but only up to a point.
The problem is that this new follower didn't follow you out of genuine organic interest (by searching for your profile, engaging with several posts, and deciding that your content is valuable to them). They followed you on a momentary impulse after seeing a single post that caught their eye. There's no real connection with your brand or your account.

yes,, that is why people Boost followers ))
paid advertising is good for sales/Clicks.

for Engagements , play your own strategy !!

Yeah I’ve done the same as you, from OFM to non OF related boosting, both ways it tends to bring low engagement followers.

If you still want to target the US without boosting the post; the content you post has to contain something that involves the audience based in the US. For example, if you start using trending songs from artists based in the US, you post will get good exposure from other US audience.

That's the classic 'Boost button' trap. Meta optimizes for the cheapest action, so they send you click-happy users who follow everyone but engage with nothing. It pumps your vanity metrics but kills your engagement rate.

Boosted followers are often low-quality and disengaged because Instagram's ad delivery prioritizes cheap, click-happy users; to fix this, slowly reduce your boost budget over 2 weeks while aggressively posting organic Reels that spark comments and shares to retrain the algorithm toward your real, engaged audience.

Cause those are fake followers and they wont engage with your content you need to grow real and targeted followers who like your niche content then only they will engage with your posts.

Sometimes boosted followers dont see organic posts because ınstagrams algorithm prioritizes accounts with consistent, natural engagement slowly posting valuable content can help re align your reach.

Most of the time, people who follow from boosted posts aren’t real fans, so your organic content won’t reach or interest them.
