I handle the local fan page for a nationwide franchise. Is there any way to optimize this fan page so that it shows up at the top when users utilize the live search to type in the business name?

I'm not sure there is such as thing as "Facebook fanpage optimization" for search, but if there is, your first point of reference should be Google, as I doubt you'll find many people with knowledge on such a thing here.

Build links to your fanpage, and optimize for good keywords. Get as many members as you can by promoting on similar fp's.

Sorry dude - Facebook is not google - Usually the fan page with the most fans shows up at the top - But you can get to the Top of Google I have a fan page that gets about 100 fans a week from google and its still growing - it is number 1 for a keyword I chose
