If I want to start a new niche site for money-making, and want it to rank high, should I purchase a new domain name for it? Or should I purchase an expired domain?

I understand that a domain name that is old has higher SEO value. But if it expired and then I buy it, does Google treat it as old or only as new as when I bought it?

Is an expired domain worth the money?

If you are able to find a old domain, that has a record within the same niche you are looking for, then buy it.

How / where do you buy an old domain for not much money?

If you buy an expired / expiring domain through Pool, I think it resets the age in the whois. I have one domain I snatched through Pool, and when I look at the whois information, it says it was "Created On" the date that I snatched it, not the date it was originally created.

So how do you buy an old domain for not much money?

"old" domains do NOT perform better just because they are "old". That is the BIGGEST myth in the expired domain game. The only way they would perform better is if they had existing in-bound links preferably with high PR.

I chatted today with a friend who is an experienced SEO. He says that if the domain drops and you buy it (e.g. through pool or snapnames), that google knows. So if you want an old domain, it has to be transferred to you by the buyer. For example, you can actually simply contact people and try to buy them.

Expired domains are sooooo ... pre-panda :p
don't really waste your money on them

Look for domains that are on the verge of expiring. Old expired ones would lose referring domains over time.

Have been reading about a similar topic for past weeks, the conclusion I got is:
- It is next to impossible to find a good expired domain without paying big money. At least 4 fig and up.
- If you do not know how to check, or have the relevant tools to check, it is better to not risk buying expired domains. You might end up buying junk.
- It is not as easy as buying a domain, creating a website, then bang, you can see the results immediately. Apparently, you still need to duplicate the previous website, dig out the juice, and replicate it to your new one.
- The domain you buy needs to have a similar niche to your new money website. If not, you are just wasting money.
- There are people selling in the marketplace. Can save you the time and agony if you find a good seller.

Edit: Damn... a 2011 post.... I feel like an idiot posting this...

Yeah, don't try to find your own expired domains.

Good domain sellers have already snapped those.

I recommend Kalin from Seo.domains.

His whole business revolves around offering good domains like that to other people. I'm a long-time customer.

Only do this if you have a budget and really make sure the links are relevant.

EDIT: I missed that this thread had been bumped since 2011! :)

Any reason you bumped a 9 year old thread?
