Experied Domain Question

Hey BHW members, hope you all have a great weekend

I'm on my way to buy a Expired domain wich i found (from a seller) wich could be a great start help for me, i did some basic research for the domain (wich i found here on the forum) and it seems fine but before i buy it i would like to ask a few more questions here

1. for e.g If the domain was build on the topic of music, would it be possible to change it to the topic of headphones (The niche will not be completely changed since it still have someting to do with music so I wonder if it would be possible)
2. After buying an expired domain, I saw that you should recreate the exact website and leave it for a time, Is that true, if so, how long would I have to wait before I could start rebuilding the website into my own idea?
3. should i add the domain in gsc immediately after purchase or should I wait with it?

if you maybe have a few tips that i could use I would be very grateful if you could share them here

i'm very thankful for all answers in advance!

1. 50-50, only way to find out is to try

2. 6-7 months should be enough from what I've heard
3.. restore the old site first and then add it

So basically I should recreate the website and then after 6-7 months I could change it into my idea right?

Google said that their last update specifically targeted people changing niche with expired domains to get an advantage. However I have recently changed the niche of an expired domain to what I would describe as a sub niche and it has worked fine. I also have a few sites which I did something similar with a year ago and they were fine with the core update. I think you will be fine.

How long did you wait until you rebuilt the experienced domain page or started taking action?
How long did you wait (after rebuilding the experied domain website) to start posting new content

Yes, but the issue I see is if the domain name itself is very music specific and your headphones blog is somehow not close enough. Overall, you really won't have much SEO problems if the site is re-indexed and all its backlinks too. Unless of course there was a manual review(rare but happens).

I think a few months is enough. It all depends on how long it took Google to re-index the domain, its backlinks as well as any of the websites pages that was ranking before. It won't always rank the page top but it'll get some search impression. Depending on exactly what the previous domain was used for and what you intend to use it for, you could have important posts(ones with inbound links) stay live while you publish your new posts. Gradually you'll phase out the old posts and redirect the pages.

The most important thing to wait for is, let google re-index the site, it's pages as well as backlinks.

After restoring the site, add to GSC, else you won't know if there any penalties or issues. Yes, add it.

I have always waited 2-3 months. As soon as stuff starts ranking again you know you are good to go.

What the other guys said is pretty much spot on, though I oftentimes wait as long as a year due to laziness reasons, but 3 months is more than enough.

The niche change here is rather subtle and shouldn't be a problem. Though with expired domains is never 100%, but the closer you are, the higher chance it will work.

Adding domain to GSC immediately is not a problem, feel free to do that.

When you say music, what does that mean? did the domain belong to a band? was it a lyric site? songs? musical equipment? music production?

How strong is the domain? what you can do with it really depends on how you are pivoting the niche towards headphones and how strong of a link profile the domain has. The safest way to make it work is to recreate the site (bring it back to life) and then add a section for headphones. It has to make sense niche wise or it may not work.

It was just an example niche that I mentioned, my domain has a different niche. As another example " The Expired domain was in the phone niche, which was generally about phones and i want to Change the Niche to lets say huawei phones/huawei phone news only"
i think i will just test it out and look what happend

One thing you should always do is exercise common sense. If there is a phone site, you restore it. Then you add pages/categories for Nokia, Huawei, IPhone, Samsung etc. Then just scale the Huawei category. Make it look natural. Unless you are operating in a foreign language, then you can do spammy/unnatural stuff, but that will also get patched sooner or later.

One creative method I've read somewhere is this:

Make a press release on your site and elsewhere about Company A (you) acquiring the Company B (the expired domain).

Basically making it very official, in broad daylight, as a means to secure it against being labeled as black hat now or down the road.
