Thats the thing. Control over content is the benefit. You can spin that in so many ways.

Yes there are benefits, at least control over content is a big deal especially when there are many active subscribers.
I actually created one recently and am thinking if there are methods, tips or tricks to growing the userbase(subs and visitors) asides the usual adding content daily.
I did - from scratch - it`s a porn subreddit with 4,993 readers
Please , do share - I have several subs with no monetization - Reddit is full of poison very hard to promote stuff

I think porn are lot easier to grow, maybe am wrong though.
how did you grow it it to 5k subs?
First I thought that I should put tons of original content - but then I discovered that crossposting is the way to go. After 1500 readers it started to pick up and they upload their own stuff I just approve it.

So by cross posting you mean sharing your own posts from other subs or you share other redditors' posts to your sub?
Well, we're here now. We can learn from the pros how they're doing it or did it

Wow, you did that manually right? how frequently?
Listen funny thing is - that for the first year I uploaded original content DAILY - and was very consistent. Once I started to give up and just crossposted every two days -and do quite a terrible job, to be honest - it started to pick up reallllly fast.

I've created a subreddit and not really bothered to grow it or monetize it. However my 2 cents is this :
1. Provide value - post on at least a weekly basis and post content that is relevant to your audience. Something that helps them solve their problems. For instance, if you are a dentist and you create a subreddit about the joy and sweet sensations of having a healthy smile, you could post about how easy one could save their teeth and keep their mouth clean (by the way, it really is EASY, brush your teeth often, kids) and along with that, you provide 3 easy techniques for brushing teeth.
2. You could, for instance, provide a link at the end of each post, leading to your dental website, where curious readers can enjoy a plethora of health-related articles. And hey, just as they are reading through the article on periodontitis ( AKA the dreaded Gum disease
), they see that you (A well-established authority figure in the dental field) recommend an extra soft toothbrush with more than 10 000 fibers, each impregnated with silver ions, which give it antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. And there, the magic happens - 24 out of every 250 readers decide to check the toothbrush out and more than half of them end up buying it and being happy. And bam, you profit.Well, that's just one possibility. There are many many more bro.

Alternatively you can request to become a moderator of a sub reddit and be able to control the content without actually taking the time to grow one yourself

I am in the superhero Marvel/DC niche, and originally created a subreddit with the same name as my brand. I realized quickly that it would take forever to grow even with crossposting. So what I decided to do is go to the subreddits already created (in the same niche) and see if it was active and if the Moderators were active. I was lucky to find one in my niche with already 2k members that was pretty much abandoned. Next I went to the subreddit where you can request to take over as a moderator, and after about a month in a half, they approved my request to take over that subreddit. So, it may be easier to take over a subreddit in the same niche than to try and create a totally new one. Just wanted to throw that idea out there.
