Don't be dumb like me when cancelling hostwinds services

I had a VPN/hosting that I did not need as most of the IPs I bought with their VPS were all blacklisted for what I needed (was just making a few IG accounts). Not a big deal, I got a big discount on my first month so I didn't care. I considered it a loss and I put in a cancellation request on their website portal. It gave the confirmation that I put in a cancellation and I figured I was done and I would not be charged the coming month. I had ordered another hosting service through them through paypal and I cancelled my billing agreement on the paypal website because I absolutely hate auto-renew subscriptions, completely forgetting that I had used my card for the VPS. I think this mistake gave me a false sense of security.

I saw some emails from them and just quickly opened it and closed it thinking it was just a brief confirmation that I had cancelled my account. I think my mind looks for links to click in these kinds of emails to ensure cancellation and when I saw none I quickly moved on. Turns out had I read it better, you have to log back into your client portal, go to the ticket that was created, and then basically copy and paste some text confirming you wanted the service cancelled. Failure to do this would result in still being billed. Again, completely my fault for not reading it. I am just so use to how other vendors work when cancelling services that I did not expect this.

1-2 weeks later and I see a few charges adding up to around $60 on my account from them. I put in a ticket the same day the charges happened wondering what was up as at the time I did not realize there was more to the cancellation. Most businesses send you an invoice a few days prior letting you know you're about to be charged but they did not do this which is unfortunate because it would have prevented this entire thing. Looking in my communication settings on their client portal, it shows they have the feature to receive emails for "created invoices" but it's turned off by default.

I point the blame at myself but I caught my error the exact day my service renewed and have not even touched the service since I thought I cancelled it. Because it was such an honest mistake I do feel a little salty over not getting a refund because that $60 hits me hard, but I accept the fact that had I read it better this would not have happened. I did get a $50 credit but as of right now I have zero use for it so it feels like the money is gone. Ah well lesson learned. I can't be the only one his has happened to so my point in all of this is don't make my same dumbass mistake and read these things better.

Well its your duty to cancel any authorization from card or paypal, still if you were charged without using their service then you should be refunded. Adding on your credit balance where you can not use is called SCAM. Why to hold someone's money on credit balance when customer do not want to use their service.

Well that's a lesson you will not forget. Perhaps you could get a refund from them if you explain the situation?

Yeah I sent a ticket telling them I did not realize there was more steps and they responded that they don't give refunds for valid renewals but as a onetime courtesy they'll give me account credit. I haven't replied back. Looking at their TOS it seems their refund policy is pretty strict.

I've never done a chargeback before. I use a prepaid paypal debit card and there's the ability to dispute transactions but I am unsure if the bank investigated it I would even be in the right. The situation has me morally mixed up on what's right.

I see their thread but the hostwinds accounts last activity was December 13th so he isn't very active unless there's another account he uses that I'm not finding.

Damn that's a lot more money, sorry to hear that

Naturally when you cancel a service you have service until your next bill date because that's what you paid for, and then it gets cut off when it was time to pay for the next month. Apparently that's not how it works with them, your service will end the moment you finish a cancellation request, even if you have remaining days left. So basically if I want my full month of hosting I need to go reply to their ticket a few days before renewal to cancel it. Any earlier and my service ends early. When I actually replied to the tickets to cancel they did it fairly quick but it's still a bad system and can lead to people forgetting pretty easily which I'm sure they bank on, especially with having invoice emails off by default.

This is why I love Paypal, I can cancel my prepproved payments whenever I want. I should have used it.

Even if it was my fault there's still a principle to why it's important to refund customers. I doubt most big hosting providers would keep the money.

The problem with hostwinds is that when you click cancel on your services. Its not cancelled what so ever. You have to do that + open a ticket to support. So i got charged for 6 months without me seeing anything. On 4 websites which was down anyway cause i was away from IM for almost 2 years. I dont know how it is now as i havent cancelled one yet. But they used to be the worst ever when it comes to that. Also requireing money for backups.

It's still the same. You click cancel and then have to reply to a ticket. What happened to you is exactly what happened to me but I caught my charge on the first day. I'd imagine it's happened to quite a few people which is why I posted this just to give people a heads up.

It looks like you wouldn't be the first person to complain about the difficulty in cancelling their service:

Always read reviews for hosting services before purchasing. I have a lot of websites and am always purchasing services. I check every offer in trustpilot.

You know what's interesting is they didn't even give me a full month of service before they charged me. When you buy a month service they shouldn't be charging you until exactly1 month has passed. They charged me 2-3 weeks early.

When people buy service near the end of the month you should not be charging them on the 31st...

I ordered some services through a deal they were having where the first month was discounted but perhaps they also were prorating it as well and I didn't know it. They must be sticking to the same monthly billing schedule for everyone.

My receipts from them are through Paypal and I cancelled the billing agreement on the Paypal website long before these charges...but I suppose I must have had a card under my account too or something because it didn't stop them from getting the money.
