I want to hear from the experts here.

I want to know what are the advantages/disadvantages of getting a domain that only has an extra letter from a High traffic local domain.

I apologized about the lack of better explanation. can't find right now the exact word.

lets say there is a domain high high traffic called miamipestcontrol.com and I find available ready to register a similar domain miamipestcontrols.com

Does it have any advantage? Would I be able to rank higher than the competition? or is not worth it since we will be sharing the traffic?

EMD (exact match domains) are far less valuable than they once were. Partial match domains even less so. So my thoughts are that unless its a domain name that SOUNDS good, and is very close to a big money keyword you're probably better off getting a domain that has better metrics and a better backlink profile. All that said if you simply "like" it then you can always give it a roll of the dice.

I have no advice regarding SEO on similar domains, howeveryou run a very real risk of losing the domain.
I've lost many domains by registering a similar domain name as a competitor.

Just browse some of the decisions on http://www.udrpsearch.com/search and you'll see how common it is for domains to get transferred over the exact thing you're planning on doing.

I've lost tcouple of domains too but that is just not fair,I mean, they are similar, not the same.

Not worth it. You cant build a brand around a similar domainand expect to stand out, and if you ever do you already have competition from the other domain owner. For you to rank i think you cant do it soley based on a similar domain, you need better content, quality backlings more engagement. Which wont be worth it if anyway. Just get a new unique domain

Got to agree with ThopHayt. EMDs are long dead and the ones with an extra letter even more so. Probably best to move on to something more brandable and develop a quality site around it.
