So I'm planning to start a new website for an idea of mine which I really hope will work out (duh xD).

Anyway, what I am wondering is this: Is there a negative side effect when I use a hyphen ( - ) in my domain name? I read something about that people may forget the hyphen or that spam filters may see your domain as a spam domain.

The good side is that I have more options to choose from.

Another thing: How do I choose a good domain for what I'm doing? It's quite a unique thing what I'm about to proceed with. I can't find many competitors, just one company doing it for kickstarters which eventually got canceled for some reason.

Anyway could anyone give me some advice on choosing a domain name and if I should try to avoid the hyphen at all cost or is it alright to use to some extend? Also how much will my SEO be affected by this? Please let me know ^^

I tend not to go with hyphens. I usually choose the .com TLD ( and also .co.uk if the site is also UK facing).
No alternatives for the .com, then I'll consider a .Org or even .Info.

I personally think hyphens look poor in a domain, most other TLDs look spammy such as the .XYZ type.

My first intention is to use a .com domain indeed. I will be stationed in The Netherlands, so maybe I should also get the .nl domain if I understand you correctly (reffering to the .co.uk domain)?

Yes, if it's something you're selling / advertising, the .com gives the global impression - do the content in English.
Also grab the .NL too and do the content in Dutch, so you're hitting both markets.
 
Use as less words as possible in a domain and sybolise your work with the domain this would best suit your work and website for development !!

I'm planning to use Wordpress / Woocommerce for my website. I guess I could just connect both domains to the site and make it multi language by swtiching from one domain to the other while still updating one site? This would quite interesting for me as I have never done this before :p A nice challenge for a change!
 
Here are tips for you which will help you to choose the domain name -

1. Make sure you will choose the domain name related to your site. That is if you would like to create the site related to games then from it's name, end-user should get the purpose of the site.

2. Make sure to choose the domain extension carefully, If you are developing the educational site then the extension should be .edu so it will clarify the use of your website.

3. You can use country specific extensions too.

4. Use the top rated keywords while assigning name to your website so it will help you to rank your website in SEO.

5. Domain name should be short and sweet, easy to remember. It should be easy to remember and catchy. I would suggest it should not be more than 20 o 25 characters. Because visitor should remember the name of your website easily. If it's too lengthy then no one remember it and as a result, no visitors, no money. Make sure it convey the purpose of your website.
 
To best honest I am having problems finding the right name. I'm not that great in making up names, let alone a domain name. Maybe I should search for acronyms or something because all the plain names for my niche are taken (or I just havent thought of it yet).

There are these domain name generators that I find quite poor when it comes to quality. Maybe someone knows a nice place for me to start?

Put in your niche's main keyword. The aanswers it provides will help you come up with the other words/acronyms your target audience uses in the niche. Something interesting might come up that you can use for the domain name.

I would avoid hyphen if possible, but one would be okay if it really makes sense. If your target country is Netherlands I'd use .nl, if worldwide then .com .net .org. Also get a hosting with Netherlands IP, makes sense to get local organic presence
 
I would like to target people all over the world. I think the dutchies are a little bit too cheap for the product I'm thinking about. Also my product will be focussed towards both businesses and people who like certain art (yes this is in some art niche).

I will avoid the hyphen. I may have some domain names in my mind.

I think the vast majority of visitors will be outside of the Netherlands, should I go with dutch hosting + cloudflare?
