Domain Age Help Thread - Ask me anything

I've heard some on this forum say the domain age resets to zero when you buy it or it drops. Is that not true?

100% not true for bought domains or recently dropped domains.

It appears when I look for aged domains through godaddy domain auctions - domain age is decided by oldest waybackmachine entry on archive, org

These days I am looking to buy a domain, it was registered in 2008 but doesnt have an entry in the waybackmachine - would you say it still counts as an aged domain?

is it indexed in google? if google has no idea about it I wouldn't say it counts as an aged domain.

try a search like this:
site:myagedomain.com
and see if anything shows. if not it'll be as good as buying a new domain.

Ok I have 30 x 1 year aged domains...sent about 30k links to all so maybe it ended with 1k to each. No anchor spin on each and all to home pages. This was 1 week ago. Traffic has dropped off a little. It was an experiment but now I'm wondering how to mitigate the coming damage...should I do another blast and maybe deep link with anchor spin to each or leave alone?

1 year old is not a break leg advantage. The real advantages start at around 2005-. The best thing to lessen the damage on your site would be to start creating authority backlinks from sites ezines, digg.com, and a stronger equivalent to ezines.

What about sandboxing a new domain? I just had a competitor pop up with a brand new domain. What would it take to have him accidentally fall down into the sandbox? How can I hit him with the shovel?

use the default xrumer link list or some super overused SB list and use direct homepage linking along with duplicate content and the same anchor text over and over. also making adult/hate duplicate content along with the posts should help as well.

1. You won't get the "aged domain" benefits if you choose to redirect the domain to another domain.

here you go:
Code:
  Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) $1 [R=301,L]
Will the same code apply when rebuilding on the same domain aged/expired domain?

I guess my questions is, when buying an aged/expired domain name what are the steps you would take when rebuilding on the same domain? (This option will keep the age factor in-place, correct?)

I've heard that drops are kind of a gamble as far as losing their juice. I know they used to lose their juice 100% of the time but right before that happened the domain itself in general was a lot more powerful than it is now.

Also do you know a good easy scrapeable source for age? I haven't tried actual whois but there's like no standard format for the entry. I want to add age to my next aftermarket domain list.

Simply 301 to your new site for all links and copy the DB's over to the new sites. I'm actually not 100% on what you mean by the question.

the domains won't gain any "trustrank" or age if you 301 to the new site but it will gain link weight and SERPS because it's almost like a direct link to the site.

Oh I know that, I'm talking about hosting content on a dropped domain and hoping to keep the juice. It's SUPPOSED to drop everything but I only recently found out people keep it a good amount of the time now. That was really really surprising.

As long as a domain is like say parked somewhere, the trustrank in google will build up over time (content is better).

Yeah I know not to buy it if it's not indexed and I'd definitely need old links too. I used to depend on nothing but expired domains for ranking and I'm glad to see that's back to a small extent.

Yay nice thread, I just came by some high Pr domains on godaddy auctions 1 pr5 3x pr4, this are from 2002-2003 and 1 pr0 form 2001 . I was not sure on what to do with them; now I do.

thanks Jesusback

Sorry bout the confusion here and thanks for taking the time answering.

OK...I have just acquired an expired/aged domain with back links and few pages in the index. I would like to rebuild this same domain with new unique content and redirect all the old indexed pages and backlinks in-place to my root domain (/Index).

What is the best approach to accomplish this task?
