I've read quite a bit about the process of "domain aging", i.e. the process of making your domain gain trust over time.

If I purchase a bunch of new domains, do they age automatically or do they begin to age once I start sending links to them? Or when I put content on them? Etc.?

Also, would you suggest not even trying to rank new domains for about six months?

OK...I have just acquired an expired/aged domain with back links and few pages in the index. I would like to rebuild this same domain with new unique content and redirect all the old indexed pages and backlinks in-place to my root domain (/Index).

What is the best approach to accomplish this task?

so you want to redirect your old site to your new site (aged site)? The best idea would be using a 301 redirect from all your pages to their site. And also signing up for Google Webmaster and letting them know from there as well.

Of course they start to age automatically but if you want to take advantage to actual aging you need to get an expired or dropping domain that was before registered and indexed before 2005.

100% not true for bought domains or recently dropped domains.

So.. If i got a domain from 1996 but on 2002 i decided to take down content and deactivated this domain ( no parking .no dns setup. just off ) and now i want to put content again in it..

Do you mean my site would rank like a new one and will have no "trust" ?

hmm that's a hard question but I think that a registrar likes to keep it's domains parked if they're not pointing anywhere.

Domain age is the most powerful factor in "TrustRank" - an algorithm not openly admitted by Google.

1.) At what point do you think a domain begins to age? At the point it receives it's first link? At the point it has its first page indexe? If it's the latter, what if the site has a page indexed, then deindexed? Does the site age then only consist of the time when the first page was indexed or the total period of time pages were actually in Google's index?

2.) If I purchase a domain that existed before 2005 and 301 it to a new domain, does the domain age carry? I realize you answered this in earlier threads, but I hoped you would clarify.

3.) In your opinion, should new domains "be worked on" or should they just be left to age? If they should be left to age, after how much time do you think it's worth working on them?

1)If it's indexed, it's aging. Yes it consists of the time it's been in Google's index.

2) No, it won't carry the domain age but instead just give you some link weight
3) You should "sprinkle" them with deeplinks over time and then after a few months you should start blasting web 2.0 properties with direct backlinks. Try to avoid direct blasting if at all possible.

I'm not 100% but it might lose it's domain age benefits if it's somehow not in any registrar for a good 5 years.

2. old site usually have strange names / doesnt make sense to our niche. what's your content strategy/tips ?
can we build the site using totally different niche?
3. first month backlinking strategy? second month?

no because the registrar will park the domain and if you noticed that it will still be indexed in google.

2. you can search on godaddy after domain auctions for a potentially related keyword domain.
3. always deep linking with varying anchor texts or "sprinkle spam" random deep links

Blasting a ton of links is not a good idea unless you use a kuribo/buffer. Create a few web 2.0 properties/articles (authority) and then blast them directly. An old site that would be pretty much in safe water for direct blasting (and instant results) would be 2000- .

Yes that domain would have a good shield against the sandbox but I still recommend that you do indirect blasts to the domain.

If it's indexed in Google, yes.

well I would take their word for it since they may have an algorithm to somehow check how long a domain has been indexed in google. I haven't tried those tools so I wouldn't know how they work.
