Does Traffic Always Mean the Page Is Working?

I have noticed that sometimes a page gets good traffic, but the traffic does not really seem useful.

The numbers look good in Analytics, but when you look at the queries bringing those visitors, they may not be looking for what the website actually offers.

This made me wonder if traffic alone is really a good way to judge a page.

Do you usually check the queries behind the traffic before deciding that a page is performing well?

Traffic is only useful if it's the right audience, I'd look at conversions, engagement, and search intent too.

A page with less traffic but better-quality visitors can be much more valuable.

Yeah, exactly. Good traffic doesn’t always mean good results if those visitors are not really interested in the site. Do you usually check search intent first, or look at conversions and engagement?

no i m done with traffic analysis on its own. some best performing page may be getting hits for all sorts of other searches. that makes the figures impressive but theres no business benefit. i would rather get fewer hits that fit the purposse of the page nd stay with it.
 
Traffic simply tells you that there is activity on your site or page but what really matters is beyond traffic, is there real engagement? Yet again, traffic means your page has potential. if you are not having enough engagement and conversions, then you need to work out a strategy that will start converting that traffic.
 
A webpage might attract thousands of visitors but if they do not find what the page actually offers it will not yield any significant or meaningful

results This is particularly important in the context of SEO where a page may rank for search queries relevant to its topic yet the underlying

search intent or the user's actual objective could be entirely different.
 
I only get a few hundred clicks a month, and I'm overwhelmed with work.

Sure, I could push out DIY guide content that potentially attracts thousands of clicks a month, but those aren't my customers. I'm already bringing in customers who spend $5-25k per job.

Traffic was never the goal, it's just a tool to get revenue. The goal is to bring in paying customers.

That is a good point. A few hundred visitors can be much more valuable than thousands of visitors who will never become customers. I think the real question is whether the traffic matches the business goal. Do you track which pages bring you the highest-value leads?
 
Food for thought, that. To which I'd say, not necessarily.
By and large, traffic is a pretty poor metric on its own if the visitors have no interest in what you're actually offering. I'd definitely look at the queries behind it, but also what those visitors do once they land. Engagement, conversions, enquiries, sales, whatever the actual goal of the page is. A page getting 10,000 visitors who aren't remotely interested in the product can be less useful than one getting 500 highly relevant visitors.

Sure, if you're already seeing a lot of traffic, you could say one of the harder parts is over, but on its own it doesn't turn a profit. Traffic volume is great on the face of it, but qualified traffic is the centre point. End goal is to be getting a lot of business, a lot of traffic can get you there but that in itself isn't the main point anyway.

I can't really track conversion rates the way you normally would with traditional ecommerce. Usually I'll get a burst of 5-20 unique sessions followed by one sale via phone, letter, fax, vendor portal (if I've worked with them before), etc.

If 20 different corporate decision makers read the site and submit one RFP, I could call that a 5% conversion rate, but that would be misleading since they all represent one buyer.

In that setup I probably wouldn’t bother with a normal conversion rate at all

I’d track the company/deal instead and just note which pages or queries showed up before the RFP or call. Makes a lot more sense when 20 sessions can still be one buyer

Exactly. Traffic alone does not performing well. I usually check the queries behind the traffic, search intent, engagement, conversions, and whether those visitors are actually relevant to the business.
A page getting 10K irrelevant visits can be less valuable than one bringing 1K highly targeted visitors.
 
Yes, I always check the queries behind traffic. High visits are not enough if visitors have the wrong intent. I also look at engagement, conversions, and relevant keywords.
