I have read and seen reviews that mention if you silo your site correctly that back-links are not even needed in most cases to rank on page 1.

Has anyone had any success with this?

Silo is only a structure that makes sure link juice is transferred from main site to categories and from categories to posts. This way, every new article gets some link juice and can therefore rank even if there aren't any backlinks. However, silo structure won't rank your websites without backlinks, but it will help you get the best out of backlinks you already have.

Thanks for the tip.
