This is a question which every blogger and seo expert got confused about. Does really meta description helps in ranking? ok here is the answer, previously you have to add you keyword in the description also as it helps in google ranking previously, but now google automatically select the meta description for your content if google finds your meta description irrelevant. Now the answer to your question is Yes and No, meta description doesn't directly affect ranking but it makes users click on your content from google search results. You have to write such content in the description so the user will click on your result and your CTR will increase. This will help you in improving your google ranking. You don't have to necessarily add your keyword in the description, if it fits naturally then it's good. But the main goal is to make the description catchy and clickable so anyone who reads it clicks on your result. If anyone has different thoughts lets other know as well.

In my humble opinion, meta description does not help in ranking

That used to work years ago!

Not for ranking, but for clickrate :)

Meta descriptions are a perfect example where SEO and User Experience meet. Meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, but they do impact the Click Through Rate (CTR).

That doesnt help you rank, its not even an imporatnt factor in SERP Ranking from last decade. Its just a very basic requirement so you would get better CTR, relevancy, lower bounce rates, keyword highlighing in SERP when ranked.

Meta descriptions themselves do not directly impact search engine rankings. However, they play a crucial role in enticing users to click through to your website from search engine results pages (SERPs). A well-crafted meta description can improve your click-through rate (CTR), which indirectly affects your SEO performance by signaling to search engines that your result is relevant and engaging to users. Therefore, while meta descriptions may not boost your rankings directly, they are instrumental in driving traffic to your site. Need assistance in ranking your site effectively? No it doesnot helps in ranking at all, it is just for increasing the click through rate.

While they don’t directly affect rankings, a well-written meta description can be indirectly influential. If Google finds your meta description irrelevant, it may choose a snippet from your page that it deems more relevant to the search query.

Yes, meta descriptions do not boost ranking but I think good written, engaging meta description improve CTR

Indirectly through CTR, worth spending a few minutes on - but do it at scale with AI instead. Unless its a very important page :)

Meta descriptions do not directly impact SEO rankings.

Contrary to popular belief, the metadescription does have an impact for your ranking. A good meta description will cause a good CTR, which is a proven ranking factor.

Piggybacking off this to ask if there are studies or cases, maybe on BHW, where someone saw a rank improvement after adding meta descriptions?

Meta description doesn't help in boosting your rank. The determinants for ranking your page is mainly bounce rate, number of links to your page and your domain authority
