Does http to https harm SEO rankings

After a little play with curl I found my SSL does not work as it suppose to... so I switched back. Thats because I use the free ssl from cloudflare which anyway does not secure the things between CF and my server, only client - CF . So I get green ssl bar but its not worth I guess. Can you PM me with your relsulst next weeks ?

Edit: Found a reason why not to move over ssl yet
Recently Google'e Webmaster analyst John Muller twitter about Self-sign SSL certificate as, "self-signed usually won't work in browsers, so we'd flag that." which means if a user issues free/Self-signed SSL certificate google will not considered that website as HTTPS ranking signal.

For now I will stay with the basic http

If you want to stay on the http is ok but move from http to https is reason behind decrease in visitors on your site is not valid. And the certificate for which you are talking about is self signed certificate.

Which ssl certificate currently you have and can you share your site with us? If you are using self signed certificate and interested to move on trusted certificate authority's ssl certificate then don't forget to checkout cheapsslcouponcode.com where you can find discount coupons for ssl certificate.

It has been quite a while, since you all tried this. Is it worth it to do this with old website?
Do you think getting on new site https is a must do? Thanks for reply.

Google itself gives a small increase in ranking for pages served over a secure connection. For real SEO you should be migrating every part of your online presence to https.

Why are you guys buying certs in 2016 when you can get them for free from Let's Encrypt?

I think switching to HTTPS will be an advantage because it will become trusted site so,users will make a click on it.
It gives more security to you and your visitors.
It will drive you more traffic and CTR also getting increased.
But you have to pay some amount for SSL certificates.
You will get really good ranking by switching to HTTPS, at starting you may have G-dance but in some days, it will settle down.

I recently made the switch to https a couple weeks back - haven't really noticed any positive or negative effects in serps

My rankings took a bit of a drop after installing SSL and then came back to where they were. That's because it's a new site. I wouldn't do it on an established website with lots of SEO invested into it.

https is better for seo, even Matt Cutts mentioned it.

Problem is you had backlinks/seo initially built for http. So when you switched to https the juice from those backlinks dropped. Either keep your new seo efforts on https, or switch back. If you started recently I suggest keeping https, and make sure new backlinks are not pointed to http..

Ahaha thanks for the daily laugh, keep following what Matt Cuts says!!!
I have no idea why so many people are getting obsessed with SSL, it does NOT help with SEO, this is the truth, not what you read in some clown's shitty blog. SSL was designed for websites that collect sensitive information from people, such as e-commerce sites, and in that case, you would be too stupid not to install a certificate anyway.

Why the hell would a website that shows you articles on how to cook (just an example) need SSL? It doesn't make sense and Google is not that stupid to put it as a factor for websites that don't collect any sensitive information at all. Affiliate sites, informational sites, even authority sites that don't deal with data collection or product selling (within the site) do not need a SSL certificate. Think with your brain people, don't believe everything you read on the internet!

Google and a lot of other organizations aim to kill unencrypted HTTP. Site data collection/selling aren't primary motivators for implementing it. It's the HTTPS Everywhere/HTTPS Always On movement. The problem that most of the people implementing SSL to get a small SEO boost is that they aren't running secure and optimized SSL setups. People think installing a cert is all that's necessary. That can't be further from the truth.

They don't implement:
- HTTP/2 + APLN
- Modern, optimized cipher suites
- Forced server side cipher suite order
- Daily rotated EDH (Ephemeral Diffie-Hellman)/Session Tickets
- HPKP (HTTP Public Key Pinning)
- Disabling of SSLv2 & SSLv3
- SSL Cache
- OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol)
- HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security)
- Secure Cookies (Cookies over SSL only)
- No compression

Besides, as more sites switch to HTTPS, you're going to need it if you want to glean any referrer info from a site running HTTPS. You get nothing if your site is HTTP and the referrer is HTTPS.

HTTPS to HTTP - the poor man's referrer blanker.

Most importantly, don't forget the canonical meta tag when you switch.

If its a new site and is not ranking anywhere, then switch. If its ranking, then you will drop in rankings and it might take a white to get back.

Not good idea to change from HTTP to https.i think so

You may be right and I am not against SSL, I also think that sooner or later it will be the standard and take over HTTP. But, at the moment, there is no need to install it on blogs that don't collect data and stress so much about it, because it doesn't provide any benefit at all in SEO. Will this change in the future in a few years? Maybe, most probably it will... However, even if it does become a ranking factor, it will be pretty much insignificant and if HTTPS becomes standard, you won't even notice the boost it can give you in rankings. Google has 200+ factors, but on-page SEO and links will always be on top!

Don't worry. It may be google dance.Give some more time to get back the ranking.

Hi, I started new project a few months ago and ranked some kw, where one of the KW was #1 for about 30k monthly searches. Recently I read about how good is SSL for seo, and changed all urls from http to https with 301. I also change the site structure but not the link structure. Suddenly last 3 days I saw drop from 1 to 9 and dancing ...
Shall I go back to http (because I don't have payment so ssl is not really neceserry) or stay to see if its going back to 1. No new competitors in the niche for months so far so I don't think anyone is moving upwards (will see .. )
I'm not sure is the website change or ssl caused the issue.
Suggestions ?

While I couldn't give you a full evaluation without first seeing exactly what you did to your website, but I can tell you HTTPS does not hurt your rankings it in fact helps them. I'm not sure what else you did but the URL structure for your website has a big impact on SEO. HTTPS does not. In fact it has a positive effect on your rankings. I've seen an HTTPS website not do any damage at all and Google trusts secure sites much more.
