Let's say you are adding videos to your WordPress blogs through the add media section, will it slow down your blog speed?
Does adding a video to your blog post slow down your WordPress website?

yes and no.
hosting them externally and embedding the code will save your server speed, but hosting them on the server wont slow down the page load speed.
mind you, i said page load, so if u got alot of users watching the video that ur server is hosting, then ull start to see some affects

Better upload them on YouTube and use the embed code to publish on website.

Okay, I was considering this but I kinda liked how WordPress player looked that's why I didn't do it.
Okay, think I might be hosting them on youtube then. Thanks guys

Not just YouTube, you can host them on other video hosting sites like Vimeo, and Dailymotion depending on the kind of content that you have.

If you are adding an embedded YouTube video, it won't slow down your WordPress website.
This has been my experience.
In fact, adding highly relevant videos to your blog posts can help you with rankings.
How?
Well, when people go to your site, a lot of them might want to bounce out.
But if they see a video, they might stick around for a little bit longer, and this can reduce your overall bounce rate.
As you probably already know, Google uses bounce rate as a ranking factor thanks to its RankBrain algorithm update.
The more you get people to stick around your website, the higher the chance your rankings will go up.
This is why I strongly suggest adding videos to your blog posts through YouTube embeds.
I have about 30 embeds on the sidebar of one of my blogs and it's going well.
So, as long as the videos are directly relevant to what you're talking about, you should be fine.

What about if the video is not a Youtube video but a video uploaded as media to wordpress, would it slow it down?

That's something you need to verify yourself using dev tools. It shouldn't be loaded until someone presses play. That'd be weird to load a video someone didn't request on a page without autoplay feature enabled. I believe WordPress is smarter than that. And video in general is rendered as the last element and isn't required for a page to be fully interactive.
If you host that video on your own server, users will have to fetch it from your server. That will cost you bandwith and some other resources.

yes it would. your pulling ur server speed, so ur server has to load your website AND the video.
id just use an external video host. free and easy

I think it mostly depends upon the server and the theme as well. If you are already using the very light weight theme and passing the web vitals then YouTube embed should not slow your website that much. In my website I haven't noticed any difference after adding the video the speed remains same though I am using Shared DigitalOcean Droplet.
