Sometimes I see people adding more and more text to a page just because competitors have longer articles. But more words do not always mean more useful information. A shorter page can sometimes answer the search much better.

I think the better question is whether the page covers what the user actually needs, rather than how many words it has.

Do you still compare word count when deciding how much content a page needs?

I do consider word count as well, because if the content is too short, users may feel it doesnt cover enough important information. But I dont target a specific word count I balance it with useful, relevant content that satisfies the search intent.

Do not write more words just to hit a target. Focus on covering the important information users are looking for. a helpful 1000 word article can perform better than a 3000 word article that only adds unnecessary details.

Exactly. Word count isn't a ranking target. I'd focus on whether the page fully satisfies the search intent and provides something useful that competing pages don't.

Sometimes that means adding content; other times, cutting unnecessary content and making the answer clearer can be the better
