Kali linux is fun, this might be a cliche answer but I really like the interface and tools for checking your website for security purposes always come in handy.

Personally, I prefer BackTrack or a custom Debian.

I think the advantage of learning and using distro of linux is that many affordable hosting uses linux.
If you wish to have a windows hosting, generally, it cost more comparatively to linux.

For me, I use ubuntu and suse for most server work, but still has windows for daily task.

I use Arch a lot and debian on my servers. But I still like windows and still have a windows box which I actively use.

Anything Debian based.

I'm too much of a pussy to use linux. But the last distro that I used that I actually liked was ubuntu. Less commands to figure out.

Slackware, probably the purest of all.

Agreed that Ubuntu has lost its edge.

Most of my systems run Debian and I use Kali for pentesting.

Unbuntu for desktop
CentOS for servers/vps

I love these distros

I use to love Unbuntu, but now they are kind of sell outs with their bloated linux. I use Mint the KDE version for my daily OS now. Kbuntu is cool, I just like Mint better.

You mean Ubuntu, right? Unless "Unbuntu" is a special nick for people who hate Ubuntu.

I use Ubuntu Ultimate which I have installed on my machine alongside Windows. At times I use puppy linux for stuff I cant' do with ubuntu.

Don't know if this counts, but I have centos server, but as main computer i prefer windows, much easier to have all programs installed, and not so much tweaking to get it work properly

When I used to Dabble in Java. I loved using Ubuntu, I fucking hate the latest Ubuntu though.

Slackware on 2 boxes, Fedora Core on 1 box I'm typing on right now, never used Ubuntu cuz if you use Slackware then Ubuntu feels like a plastic toy

Why so? What makes you a real man?

I use Gentoo exclusively for last few years on my laptop, no Win boxes at home at all. I wouldn't say compiling everything from sources is kind of interesting thing, but Gentoo unstable is one of a few distros where I can have up to date KDE and other apps. And in the same time, unlike Arch, it is stable enough as maintainers don't, for example, change default python from 2 to 3 overnight.

In my opinion Linux on desktops still lags behind windows for average user. I'd put KDE between XP and WIn 7 in terms of overall usability. One of reasons to have it at home is when you develop a lot of scripts for linux and want to have the same environment on your development box without using virtual machines. Another reason is that with linux you're pretty much safe from troyans and exploits, as they are being written mostly for Win and OSX.


Upd: I use Debian on my servers and vps's and have no idea why people still choose CentOS for their servers. C'mon guys, Centos' default repository lacks lots of necessary stuff, such as nginx. You just have to plug in 3rd party repos and turn your system into a mess. It has RHEL as upstream with all that lawyers stuff related to huge corporations - such as the case when CentOS had crippled OpenSSL without elliptic curve algorithms because there were some obscure patent problems. Why not Debian? Is it because CPanel works on Centos only? There are other panels, and anyway, vanilla ssh console is almost always faster way to do things.
