Note that I'm not asking for the best. I'm just wondering what you like about your free OS, if you're using one.

I've just downloaded the latest Ubuntu and Linux Mint iso's, and I'm looking for more suggestions. Free stuff is always better than not free stuff, and I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I reject my Windows 8 for the day, and boot up into some nice, fast, free distro and do my work.

I don't use it because most software that i use for work is for windows
 
I use ubuntu 12.04, and then use virtualbox to run a virtual windows machine when I need to run .exe's
 
I use it. I mostly use Ubuntu and CentOS, never thought I would say it, but I prefer shell over GUI interface:-)
 
Currently using an old release of Lubuntu as my proper laptop has died, and I needed something that will run on 512MB RAM that still had some useful apps.
 
I use mint every now and again on my desktop and centos for dedicated server/VPS. I even hooked my mother up with zorin-os on her outdated laptop and it runs like a dream, it's a minimalistic distrobution ideal for low spec computers and geared towards windows users, it's ace.

Gui is different but it runs fast and smooth, i've had nearly zero problems in 6 months of usage, highly recommended
 
centos on all my VPSs and I have a box at the house with ubuntu for TOR browsing. +1 for no GUI when I can.
 
I last used manjaro. Kind of an out of the box more GUI based version of arch, I thought I was best to use this than go straight to arch because it was the first linux OS I had ever used. I loved it :) so I am now in the process of dual booting windows 8 for the efficency of running windows only programs rather than using something like wine or crossover with their compatibility issues, and Arch linux. Only problem is that I am finding Arch linux rather difficult to install the first time. Also as a tip if anyone has problems with their linux then I recommend checking out the archwiki even if you are not using arch simply because of the large amount of helpful information available there :)
 
I use Debian, Centos, Ubuntu and Mint. Ubuntu is a bit heavy nowadays, but you can replace Unity with LXDE, XFCE, etc.
 
I started on CentOs, moved to Slackware, then to Debian, then to Ubuntu. When Ubuntu began including ad and spyware in 13.04, I stopped using Ubuntu. Now that Kali is Debian based, I have no use for Ubuntu.

Ubuntu was nice because I did not have to spend much time setting devices up to operate properly. I have work to do, and would rather do that work than tinker with the OS.

Most of my work is Windows oriented and will not function under Wine or other Windows emulators. The resource toll is too great to use VMware or Virtual Box for some of the greater resource using programs, mandating the use of Windows.

Overall, my opinion is that for the most part, Linux is an enthusiasts and tinkerers operating system. Much more so than Windows.

I'll admit I know very little about anything without a GUI, but I'm always willing to learn. Had a fun 5 hours the other day in the Ubuntu terminal, trying to change my screen resolution...
