Do You Take Any Multivitamins or Other Supplements?

I try to eat well and I take a ton of vitamin supplements especially vitamin D for the winter. I seriously do not believe in studies that were conducted because there is always bias involved which probably skew results.

Happy New Year everyone!

Multivitamins have been shown to decrease life expectancy. It is great to take individual vitamins, but not a pill/chew that has them all. Your liver will be overblown with various metals.

I take an aspirin when I go to sleep, because it thins blood; having positive effects.

Aspirin is pretty effective, vitamin E and fish oil have similar effects. People disregard supps because they don't work in minutes like drugs, and that's the point.
Supps are a long-term insurance while drugs are constantly taken since their lifespan is a few hours at best.

Taking a multivitamin is a great benefit to health. You don't need the high priced ones either. For men, you'll want to get one with Iron in it.

Actually, you will want the opposite. Most men don't need extra iron, women generally do based on losing iron in menstrual cycles.

That being said, I've been vegan for a while so I take a few things just to keep me healthy. In all honest, I don't need to take them. I am healthier than I ever was when I was an omnivore, but it's just an easy way to stay ontop of things.

Multi-vitamin - I just take a cheapish multi-vitamin. I don't really need it given that most of what I eat is fresh fruit and veges, but they are cheap and it doesn't hurt.
Iron - I take a small iron tablet a day. Again, not really required and in some men, it can be too much. I need to take a bit more iron than most as I don't have a source of heme iron.
Vitamin C - Mostly during winter. But I also need it to better absorb non-heme iron both from veges + the iron tablet.
B12 - The one vitamin that vegans can't get. Something like up to 80% of vegans have a b12 deficiency. There is NO source of natural B12 for vegans, so this is important for me.

I also recently tried taking magnesium at night which acts as a muscle relaxant. I do BJJ so my muscles can be incredibly tight after training. In truth though, the level of magnesium in the pills is pretty damn small. You would probably get more from eating a good steak (Of which I can't do so :p ).

Alot of people hating on supplements in this thread. In some was they are correct, if you already have a good level of a particular vitamin, then plowing your body with more won't do any good. But for most people, supplements are just making sure they are reaching that level. And for people like me, it's putting something in my body that I am unable to get elsewhere.

they are addictive, if you want them then try natural source.

eating a apple is better than taking a iron tablet. if you can eat fruits/food then why to use tablets.

you need them only if you not have teeth to eat food/prescribed by doctor.

Mostly they make for expensive urine. There are a few fat soluble ones you should look out for (I think A, D, E and K?) that can do damage if you mega-dose, but apart from that you mainly just piss it out.

lol at all the supplement hate. this is what I take

multi vitamin each day - some people say they don't do much but honestly I do feel better and healthier by taking them, and I don't get any branded ones, just cheap essential ones.

pre workout - C4 - this just gives me a great boost and lets me workout harder for longer, ingredients in there have studies to show the effects

intra workout, amino acid - amino build - help me recover faster and makes me feel like I can go longer in my workouts

protein - whey protein - simple cheap protein I take after workout and if I don't have time to have a full meal

creatine - increases muscle contractions so it helps me lift more, also one of the ingredients in C4, and it makes muscles look fuller as it helps retain water in the muscles.

inciner-8 - I just use this when I want more energy and more focus.

I'm not someone who buys into the hype of any supplements I research the ingredients and learn how they work on a biological level. I only have supplements form 3 big brands, cellucor (C4), muscle tech (amino build), and bodybuilding.com (inciner-8) and the only reason is because they were either on offer or are the market leader (C4).

+1 this (post too short)

Do be stupid the purpose of vitamins is to fulfill a lack of VITAMINS. They do serve a purpose EXAMPLE. I lack Iron, I take an iron supplement to SUPPLEMENT my loss.

Hopefully you aren't in charge of anyones health. An apple contains 0.3MG of iron (about 7% of RDI)..... Need alot more than an apple to get you there. Not to mention it is non-heme iron which isn't as well absorbed.

Maybe he meant Adam's Apples

I take Fish Oil. Its really good for you. Just uhh... whatever you do, check your pockets before washing your clothes. A load of laundry with just ONE fish oil pill will RUIN your clothes. I STILL cant get the fishy smell out.

And ive done it twice. :/

I use to take multivitamins and other supplements. After further research I'm against them all. I feel like I get the same results in the gym.

Really depends, mate.
Multivitamins, Vit C, etc. won't have any effect at all on your results in the gym. Why would they?
The only supplement that could really affect you is creatine, because it actually increases your strength.
The rest of it, whey protein, BCAAs, glutamine, they're all assisting, but you could probably do without. They CAN be helpful, but they won't if you don't know how and when to take them and for what occasion.

I generally eat about once a day, sometimes twice, and rarely three times in a day. So Yes, I use multi-vitamins. Before you ask, it has taken eight years to bring my weight from my iron driving days (When I ate 5 to six times per day) down from 220 to 170. Age and injury caught up with me.

I don't even know how you argue against multis. At worst they do nothing. But I highly doubt anyone here is getting the daily recommended value of all vitamins through diet alone. I am seeing Vitamin D and Iron being mentioned on this thread frequently. Those are often prescribed by doctors alone so I imagine this adds some validity to multis. The idea that you eat foods and get vitamins from the foods but you do not get vitamins from taking vitamins seems like a bizarre perspective. I agree some vitamins are more easily digested in certain forms ie. natural, extract, isolate, time-released, oral, intravenous, etc. but when the doctor checks your blood and the vitamin levels have increased due to vitamin supplement intake I am pretty sure they are working in supplement form.
