Well anyway, I found my goldmine on the topic:


People are angry, and divided, yay

Some say soda and vinegar does nothing because they neutralize each other, and because science. Others say it does work because fizzy bubbles, and science, and it works because they've been using it for 15 years. So at this point it's just a matter of who you believe on that.

Regarding the water, not running boiling hot water constantly for too long makes sense. I assume my pipes are plastic or PVC or something, not metal anyway. So if I do this I'll be alternating between boiling hot and cold water.

Also the scientists that say that vinegar + soda won't work because they neutralize each other, they also say that vinegar alone may work, and soda alone may work, because science.

So I guess the best thing would be you pour some soda and wait a while, then you pour some vinegar and wait a while, then you let some hot/cold/hot/cold water run for a while. Then you wait a while and you do it again, and again. And while you're "waiting for a while" you can jump from kitchen sink to bathroom sink to shower sink to toilet bowl. Boom boom boom 15 minutes you're all done.

Also some people said you shouldn't pour boiling water in the toilet, because porcelain or something could crack and leave you with a mess on your hands. But fuck it then the toilet gets just the flushing water. You pour in the soda, wait, then vinegar, wait, then flush. Do it again.

Yeah okay I'll probably do this once every 4 months. It's only 3 times per year, it's often enough to where it's not like a brand new thing you're doing every time, but rarely enough to where you don't feel like you just did it yesterday WTF I gotta do it again OMG time flies...

Anyway imma ask my plumber guy about this too. He's pretty good, and it's his job, sort of, so he may have a thought or two on the subject. And depending on what he tells me I'll make my decision, write it on my monthly to-do list, and consider the topic closed

We do not clean the pipes here.

Like a couple of you I do have a septic tank, 900 or 1,200 gallons (I forget the size but not the cost), with a 300 gallon pumping tank to go into the drain field.

That gets fed a beer or two a month just to keep the bacteria happy but cleaning the pipes leading out to there is not something I have ever heard of, or even considered doing, and I've owned a lot of properties over the years.

Okay so based on my reading and the few people I asked, it seems there's no, like, established science regarding this. Everybody just does whatever the fuck they want. Some don't clean at all, others use various chemicals, and others, like my plumber told me that there's no need to do anything if the piping is good. But the piping probably isn't good. Unless I set the pipes, then it's not good, and I didn't set no pipes

Eh, whatever...

So based on all of that, I'll also do whatever the fuck I want. Soda+vingear+water it is.

So the plan is, I'll do it once every 4 months. On the kitchen and bathroom and shower drains I'll put soda and let it sit for a few minutes, then pour vinegar and let the fizzing happen and let it sit for a few minutes, and then I'll wash it all away with hot water (but I'll alternate between hot and cold water because I don't want boiling hot water running through them pipes for too long).

As for the toilet, I'll do the same, except I'll let the soda and vinegar sit for like an hour. Then I'll take the cleaning brush and brush inside the toilet where I can reach you know, and then flush. Maybe flush twice.

This won't take too long to do, and it won't cost much. And I think once every 4 months is good enough for basic maintenance. Also, soda and vinegar are pretty weak chemicals, so they won't cause any damage on anything. And as long as I'm careful with the hot water and how long I let it run through the pipes, there's no risk at all.

Some would probably say that this is an unnecessary waste of time. But I did this recently in my shower drain, and in the shower drain when I pick up the metal cover, there's like water that stays there, probably to prevent any bad smells from coming through. And there where the water stays there was like all this gunk there. Like black/dark-ish gunk. Easily removable. But I shower there, and clearly just showering and running the water did not remove this gunk. But the soda+vinegar+hot water did remove it, without me scrubbing at all. Perhaps it got removed because the water pressure was hitting there pretty strong, and maybe soda and vinegar did nothing, I don't know.

Anyway that's it. I'll do this tonight, and write it down to do every 4 months, and that's that.

I like to buy those drain cleaner liquid bottles from the hardware store. It’s strange paying for a bottle and pouring it right down the sink. It feels like pouring money down the drain. But it works lol

I got to get in on this drain pipe cleaning craze. I'm already thinking of some products to sell. To manufacture or not to manufacture is the question...
