Whitehat seo is very costly. Does this cause people to look for other options like blackhat seo?

I kind of laugh and agree with this.

For most people "black hat seo" means in reality "cheap backlinks from link farms" :D

It's easier, faster, and honestly grey hat makes more sense for what SEO is supposed to be.

In the eyes of Google, any form of backlink generation is considered against TOS/black hat and I think that's foolishness.

Lol, this is funny. Blackhatseo is not cheap unless the person doing it has insufficient knowledge.

Yup! People like to separate "black" vs "white" but both are deliberate link-building that technically is against Google's TOS.
Calling guest posting & niche edits "white hat" is still, once again, against the TOS. Not like any of us follow Google's TOS, let's be frank ;)

It's not cheaper, it's faster. Higher risk often means higher reward.

It really depends on the project. A mix of both is probably the best.
And mix of black and white leaves us with... Grey Hat! Probably the best way to go. "Safer" than Black hat but not so time consuming and long term goals oriented as White Hat.

I think the main reason people go for Black Hat it's not money but speed, as you see results a lot faster.

There is also a sense of adventure while using black hat SEO because of the risks involved. And yes it is cheaper at least in the short term.

Black hat is actually more expensive than white hat. Whitehat is only expensive with regards to the time you 'waste' or spend waiting for things to pick up.

Quality backlinks acquisition cost a lot of money, it even costs more when you want to pay for or build a premium PBN.

Unless your definition of black hat is buying stupid spammy backlinks that cost $5 for 1000 links.

The strategy is worth it but is also one of the more difficult ones. Likewise, you have to consider other possible effects on your website or search engine rankings, such as automatic penalties from Google or constant changes to SEO best practices.

there is no such thing as "greyhat". either you do whitehat or blackhat, there is no inbetween.
blackhat can be cheaper if you have technical skills and can do stuff on your own i.e. create bots, know server administration and seo tricks.
its also not always short term as many people believe. i have auto generated and cloaked sites up since +10 years and they still rank and bring traffic even after 122344354635 google updates since then...

Yeah, hence why I said "it makes more sense for what SEO is supposed to be".

Black hat is cheaper and more result oriented , thats why people opt for black hat !
