Do I need to purchase a server for expired domain name 301 redirection

Godaddy already allows you to forward the domain as @C4rnage569 mentioned,
if you want to make a custom redirection using htaccess just point the domain to your current web hosting, add it there then edit the htaccess file

However, to fully utilize the redirect and make sure it works, I prefer to host the domain, recover it and just let it rest for a few months. Then do a redirect.

After another few months you can cancel the hosting subscription and leave the redirect in place via registrar.
