From what I've heard, RankBrain is mainly sorting out their semantic search and the issues with that rather than concentrating on links. If you can post some information about the AI approach to links I'd love to read it.

I agree with this - is there such as thing as 'careful black hat'?
I worked for a company 2-3 years ago who were hit by a manual penalty and that was painful to get out of (3-4 months of full time work). They were getting 600+ very low quality links per week and were completely overdoing it without really reviewing their methods for years.
I'm sure someone, somewhere is ranking with 100% squeaky clean white hat and just great content, but I'm yet to see a site for a SME or unknown brand that's managed it without some sort of push, if not some blackhat SEO then some serious advertising money to start getting mentions and links.

This question is the same as:
"do bots work" or
"do emails work" or
"do ads work"?
Someone could easily say that bots don't work because they couldn't build one that made money, or they couldn't send an email that converted, or their ads cost more than their revenue. Likewise, someone could say that each of those things do work because they work for them.
There is, someone, somewhere, right now, making big bucks off of "blackhat SEO", guaranteed, obviously.
But there isn't one kind of SEO, or one kind of white hat SEO, or one kind of Blackhat SEO. Chances are that every kind of SEO you're thinking of is blackhat, and chances are that some of those kinds work great, if you use them intelligently.
Ask a more specific question, like:
"Does building backlinks via forum content that's spun work for SEO?"
and you will get a much clearer answer.

Yes BH still works! You have to evolve and keep up with the newest threads. Read on all the threads that are about testing methods, and from there it is best to test it yourself to see if it works for you. If it works, then you put in all your effort into that method.
